Consumer spending on mobile applications reached US $170 billion in 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 19% From App Annie

The following is the Consumer spending on mobile applications reached US $170 billion in 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 19% From App Annie recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: App Annie, App Store, Mobile application.

According to the state of mobile 2022 report released by app Annie today, consumers’ spending on mobile applications reached $170 billion in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 19%, only one percentage point lower than the growth rate in the company’s last annual report. The report conducted a comprehensive investigation on the application economy of Apple App store, Google play and the domestic third-party Android App store.

The report shows that the number of application downloads in 2021 is 230 billion, breaking the historical record, but the growth rate itself is slowing down. According to the report released in January 2021, APP Annie reported that the number of downloads increased by 7% year-on-year in 2020 and decreased to only 5% in 2021. Last year’s download growth was mainly driven by emerging markets such as India and Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Egypt.

It’s also clear that consumers are spending more and more time in Apps – in some cases even more than they watch TV. In the top 10 markets studied and analyzed, the average time spent in applications exceeded 4 hours and 48 minutes in 2021, an increase of 30% over 2019. This includes the averages of Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, India, Japan, Turkey, Singapore, Canada, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, France, Germany and China.

Most of this time is spent on social, photo and video applications. In the past year, 7 minutes of every 10 minutes spent on mobile phones have been spent on these applications. These categories, together with entertainment applications, also attract Gen Z users, especially in the United States.

In the United States, the most commonly used applications of generation Z include instagram, tiktok, snapchat and Netflix. Meanwhile, millennials prefer Facebook, Messenger, Amazon and WhatsApp. Generation X, now included in the baby boom population, uses the weather channel, Amazon Alexa, Newsbreak and ring.

This increase in time spent in applications has a direct impact on consumer spending. In the United States, the impact of the covid-19 pandemic has persisted, forcing users to shop, work, study, play and entertain at home over the past year. App Annie said that this led to an “amazing” increase in consumer spending because the market increased by $43 billion in 2021, or $10.4 billion more than 2020, equivalent to a 30% year-on-year increase – higher than the global average.

In terms of consumer spending, 233 applications and games generated more than $100 million in revenue in 2021, and 13 games generated more than $1 billion. This is an increase of 20% over 2020, when 193 applications and games exceeded the $100 million mark, and only 8 titles exceeded $1 billion a year.

In addition to consumer spending including paid apps, subscriptions and in app purchases, although marketers are worried about Apple’s privacy changes and the impact of IDFA, the broader mobile application market reached $295 billion in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 23%. In 2022, with the help of major events such as the Beijing Olympic Games and the U.S. mid-term elections, the market is expected to grow to $350 billion.

In 2021, the release of new mobile applications also increased. Publishers launched 2 million new applications and games, bringing the total number of applications and games released by the whole app store and Google play to more than 21 million. Of course, old apps and games were later deleted by publishers themselves or app stores during cleanup over the years. At present, there are 5.4 million “real-time” applications and games in the app store, including 1.8 million on IOS and 3.6 million on Google play.

The report points out that Google play also accounted for 77% of all new content released last year, while games accounted for 15% of all content released by the two stores.

App Annie’s complete report also conducted in-depth research on individual application categories, including games, finance, retail, video streaming, food and beverage, health and fitness, social networking, tourism, dating, etc.
