Information sources of used car buyers

Over the years, the Internet has been playing a fundamental role in the process of information collection, with 20% of second-hand cars purchased without the help of the Internet. If used car buyers are specifically asked about the importance of dealers’ and manufacturers’ websites, dealers’ websites are still the third-largest online source, accounting for 22%, while manufacturers / importers’ websites for used car purchasing, although there are many activities, are not yet the same as those for purchasing new cars, accounting for 11%.

In the process of collecting information, 69% of used car buyers browse on the usual online platform to get a general idea of the quotation. This is slightly higher than the previous year’s level (63%). Compared with 2018, Google’s search volume has increased significantly (from 36% to 42%). Social media seems to be influencing car buying more and more, and getting more and more attention.

The role of Internet in car purchase

This page shows the role of the Internet in buying cars. According to online research, 29% of people contacted dealers in a wider region, and 15% changed the car company they had chosen. One in five people chose second-hand cars or changed brands or models due to the Internet.

Criteria for buying used cars

When buying a used car, which factors are important? This issue plays an important role in the discussion about buying a car. The figure above lists 21 criteria for buyer classification. The score ranged from 1 “very important” (11 responses) to 2 “important” (10 responses), 3 “not very important” to 4 “not important” (no response).

Basically, all the criteria are identified as “very important” and “important.”. Among them, vehicle reliability, purchase price and no accident are considered to be the three most important factors. Eight other factors were also identified as “very important.”.

It should be emphasized that the “accident free” standard is very important for all used car buyers, but it also applies to the following conditions: the younger the buyer is, the older the vehicle is, the less important it is to ensure that there will be no accidents in used cars.

Although the discussion on the environmental protection of motor vehicles has been going on all the time, people have to say that the environmental friendliness (explicitly requiring CO2 emission) once again ranks 16th (2.35). Compared with previous years, its importance has increased, but it is not very advanced.

The importance of test drive

“Did one or more test drives take place during the purchase process?” 86% of used car buyers said yes. The figure above shows that 91% of the customers who buy a car at a brand dealer will test drive, while 90% of the customers who buy a car at an independent dealer will test drive. In private transactions, 77% of the waiting people think that they should test drive. Compared with the previous year, they are younger, drive less and have higher mobility. The proportion of vehicles in that year also increased by 11% compared with that in 2018. Surprisingly, the number of cars purchased from brand dealers is six months less than the previous year, with an average age of four years. On the contrary, rather old cars are traded in the private market.

In the analysis of used car market share, we can see that brand dealers accounted for 46% of used car sales in 2019, while independent non brand dealers increased their share to 21% (the same as the years before the diesel crisis). One third of all used cars are traded in the private market.

The fact that there are obviously more young cars purchased from brand dealers is also reflected in the overall distribution of used cars by age group. For vehicles with more than six years of experience, brand retail accounts for only 15% (2018:22%) and private market 59% (2018:52%).

In the 3-to 6-year-old segment, the share of brand dealers decreased from 52% in 2018 to 44%, while the share of independent dealers increased significantly from 14% to 26%. The dominant position of brand dealers is very obvious in vehicles with less than three years, accounting for 77%, while private transactions account for only 11%.

Matters needing attention when selecting dealers

There are several factors at work when buyers choose dealers and decide to support or oppose automobile companies. The report lists the factors that affect the buyer’s purchase of the car. Respondents should use the scale to show the importance of different aspects to them. The score ranges from 1 “very important” to 2 “important” to 3 “not very important” and 4 “not important”.

Here are 13 factors related to brand dealers and independent dealers, sorted by the rating of car buyers.

The corresponding average level shows the buyer’s requirements in 2019, all responses only occur in “very important” and “important”, and there is no response in “less important” or “unimportant”.

Whether it is a brand dealer or an independent dealer, the car condition, value and test drive are among the top three important factors, which play a vital role in the purchase process.

For buyers who deal with brand distributors, the good reputation of distributors seems to be more important than that of independent distributors. In the second-hand car transaction at the brand dealer, 11 of the 13 factors are considered as very important by the buyer; while in the second-hand car transaction at the independent dealer, 9 of the 13 factors are considered as very important by the buyer.

Specific reasons for purchase

Some of these factors have very obvious differences among different car purchase locations. For example, the recommendation of relatives or acquaintances is not an important factor for buyers who buy cars at brand dealers and independent dealers, but it is more important for private market transactions (ranked eighth). For private market buyers, Internet advertising (ranked sixth) is much more important than car buyers at brand dealers and independent dealers.

The above is the average purchase price of second-hand cars. In 2019, the willingness of car buyers to invest has increased. The price of second-hand cars is always based on the actual transaction price, that is, the purchase price including VAT. The average price of second-hand cars has risen to an all-time high (? 12470), which is related to the purchase of younger cars and higher SUV quotas. Used car prices by market

In brand authorized dealer transactions, buyers paid an average price of 16470 euros for used cars, an increase of 6% over the previous year. The average number of cars sold by brand authorized dealers is four years old, six months less than the previous year.

The growth of independent dealers was more pronounced, with the ability to sell vehicles at an average price of nearly 10000 euros (9780 euros), an increase of 24%. Used cars sold for less than 10000 euros accounted for 44% of the total volume.

Priority focus on second hand car purchase

In 2019, 20% of used car buyers said they were absolutely loyal to the brand, 47% switched between two or three brands, and 33% said they didn’t care about the brand. 34% of the car buyers give priority to the price of the car, and then to the model. This group of buyers buy the car at an average price of 8800 euros; another 66% of the car buyers give priority to the model, and then to the price. This group of buyers buy the car at an average price of 14410 euros.

76% of the buyers who buy cars from brand dealers give priority to focus on models and 24% on price; 57% of the buyers who buy cars from independent dealers give priority to focus on models and 43% on price; in private transactions, 56% focus on models and 44% on price.

The low proportion of warranty in the private market can be explained by the fact that the vehicles traded there are obviously older than those traded at dealers, so there is usually no longer any guarantee protection.
