According to the latest data from synergy research group, the European cloud market has more than tripled since the beginning of 2017, reaching 5.9 billion euros (about 6.9 billion US dollars) in the third quarter of 2020. During the same period, European service providers’ cloud revenue increased, but their market share dropped from 26% to less than 16% due to the rise of Amazon, Microsoft and Google. The three leading global cloud providers are growing rapidly and currently account for 66% of the European market. The European market also includes smaller cloud providers in the US and Asia, whose market share is steadily declining. Among the European cloud providers, Deutsche Telekom is the market leader with a 2% share, followed by ovhcloud, orange and many national telecom companies as well as regional cloud and hosting experts.

Synergy estimates that in 2020, the revenue of cloud infrastructure services (including IAAs, PAAS and managed private cloud services) in Europe will exceed 23 billion euros, an increase of 31% over 2019. IAAs and PAAS services account for nearly 80% of the market share, and they are growing faster than the smaller hosted or hosted private cloud segments. The fastest growing segment is PAAS, which includes databases, Internet of things and analytical services.

John dinsdale, chief analyst at synergy research group, said: “European cloud providers are trying to gain greater appeal in the market by focusing on customer segmentation and use cases with more stringent data sovereignty and privacy requirements. This led to the launch of the gaia-x plan to try to reverse the fate of the European cloud computing industry. The three largest cloud providers in the United States currently have 67 super large data centers and more than 150 additional local outlets in Europe, while the second largest cloud provider in the United States has another 36 major data centers. In the past four quarters, their capital expenditure in Europe totalled 12 billion euros, an increase of 20% over the previous four quarters.
