In December 2020, Ipsos global consumer confidence index, which is composed of 24 markets (compared with the change in three months), was 42.5, up 0.5 percentage points from last month. The index is now 2.5 points higher than its all-time low in June, but still 6.1 points lower than before the outbreak in January.

The consumer confidence index reflects consumers’ attitude towards the current and future situation of the local economy, as well as their confidence in personal financial situation, savings and large-scale investment. Consumer confidence in Australia has returned to pre pandemic levels, with most of Europe remaining stable, while consumer confidence in the United States has declined.

The consumer confidence index of three markets showed significant growth this month, with Israel (+ 2.8), Australia (+ 2.6) and India (+ 1.8). Australia grew by more than 2 percentage points for the third consecutive month. In contrast, there were only two markets with significant declines in consumer confidence (1.5 points or more), Hungary (- 1.9) and the United States (- 1.6). However, consumer confidence declined significantly in seven markets (Poland, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Russia and Turkey) between October and November.

Global consumer confidence index

China’s consumer confidence index this month is still significantly higher than that in January 2020 (+ 3.0). Since July, China’s consumer confidence index has been flat or higher than 69.6 in January. After China, Australia is the second of the 24 markets surveyed to return to the pre pandemic index. Australia’s consumer confidence index is only 0.5 percentage points higher than in January.

Among the 24 markets surveyed, the consumer confidence index of 7 markets is higher than 50. China (72.7), Saudi Arabia (61.1), Sweden (53.3), Australia (51.0), the United States (50.5), India (50.2) and Germany (50.1);

On the contrary, the consumer confidence index of seven markets was lower than 35, Turkey (30.4), Spain (33.2), Hungary (33.5), South Africa (34.1), Argentina (34.2), Poland (34.5) and Russia (34.8).

Employment, expectation and investment index trends

The consumer confidence index has three subsets: employment index, expectation index and investment index. Employment index represents job security, unemployment experience and employment situation; expectation index reflects personal finance, community economy and employment prospect; investment index shows consumers’ purchase and investment confidence in investment environment, personal financial status and prospect. In the latest released consumer confidence index, the employment index (0.0), the expectation index (+ 0.8) and the investment index (+ 0.6) all showed slight growth last month.

Employment index (48.1): there are only two markets (Israel and Australia) with significant growth in employment index compared with last month. Hungary is the only market with significant decline;

Expected index (53.0): the expected indexes of Australia, Belgium, South Africa, UK, Turkey and Israel increased significantly this month, compared with the US being the only market expected to decline significantly (- 2.0). The index is expected to rise by 0.8 percentage points compared with that of last month. The index has reached the highest level since March, but it is still 4.0 percentage points lower than that of January;

Investment index (36.2): compared with last month, the investment index of Australia, India, Israel and Mexico increased by at least 1.5 percentage points, while the index of the United States and Hungary decreased significantly (by 1.7 percentage points and 1.6 percentage points).
