IDC Japan released the trend of Japanese server market. In the third quarter of 2020, the total sales volume of Japan’s domestic server market was 106.8 billion yen, down 22.2% from the same period last year. The shipment volume was 109000 units, down 20.4% from the same period last year.

By product, both x86 servers and mainframes showed double-digit year-on-year negative growth, which led to the decline of the entire Japanese server market. Other servers showed positive growth, but did not make up for the negative growth of the domestic server market.

Sales of X86 servers fell 19.5% year-on-year to 89.3 billion yen. The shipment volume was 107500 units, a year-on-year decrease of 21.1%. In the x86 server segment, the sales volume of standard servers decreased by 19.7% to 75 billion yen, and the shipment volume decreased by 23.6% to 87600 units. The sales volume of customized servers decreased by 18.2% to 14.3 billion yen, and the shipment volume decreased by 7.5% to 19900 units.

Sales of mainframes were 9.6 billion yen, down 50.7% from the same period last year. Sales of other servers increased by 13.7% year-on-year to 7.9 billion yen, thanks to the contribution of IT services, government departments and large manufacturing projects.

Fujitsu maintains the highest position by company. Next are NEC, Japan’s Hulett Packard (HPE), Dell technology and Hitachi. Hitachi rose to fifth place from sixth in the last quarter. In terms of shipment volume, Fujitsu maintained the first place, HPE rose to the second place from the third place in the last quarter, followed by NEC, Dell technology and Hitachi. Hitachi rose to fifth place from seventh in the last quarter.
