Amazon’s advertising revenue in the United States increased to $15.73 billion last year, and its market share increased from 7.8% in 2019 to 10.3% in 2020. The growth was driven by search revenue from sponsored products and brands, while video advertising revenue from Amazon fire TV, twitch and IMDB TV also increased significantly.
This year, emarketer expects Amazon’s U.S. advertising business to grow another 30.1%, surpassing $20 billion for the first time, higher than the forecast for the fourth quarter of 2020. This makes it expected to break through $30 billion in advertising revenue in 2023.
Importantly, Amazon continues to slowly reduce Google’s share of total online advertising revenue in the United States. Although the latter’s online advertising business is still growing, its share will drop from 28.9% in 2020 to 26.6% in 2023.
More specifically, Amazon is eating into Google’s share of search as it monetizes channels better.
