Amazon will benefit a lot from the new crown pandemic as it moves consumers online in 2020. Not only has its e-commerce business achieved double-digit growth, Amazon’s advertising business grew by 52.5% last year, making its share in the U.S. online advertising market exceed 10% for the first time. Amazon’s advertising revenue in the United States increased to $15.73 billion last year, and its market share increased from 7.8% in 2019 to 10.3% in 2020. Importantly, Amazon continues to slowly reduce Google’s share of total online advertising revenue in the United States. Although the latter’s online advertising business is still growing, its share will drop from 28.9% in 2020 to 26.6% in 2023.

More specifically, Amazon is eating into Google’s share of search as it monetizes channels better. In 2021, Amazon’s search advertising business will grow to US $14.53 billion, increasing its share of us search advertising spending from 13.3% in 2019 to 19%. By the end of 2022, its share will exceed 20%.

E-commerce advertising, including search advertising and retail display advertising, accounts for about 89% of Amazon’s advertising revenue. The rest of Amazon’s advertising revenue comes from advertising on its video platform and non property advertising sold through Amazon DSP. This year, Amazon will control 76.2% of the nearly $24 billion e-commerce advertising market. By contrast, Wal Mart, which ranks second, will have only 6.5% market share.
