Kaspersky laboratory analyzed and classified the most popular websites and search queries during the festival period (December 20, 2020 to January 10, 2021) to find out how children can make up for the lack of outdoor entertainment in winter.

Children most often visit websites with video and audio content (40.36%), higher than the annual average (39.11% from June 2019 to may 2020). The second place is online communication platform (25.8%), with increased access to WhatsApp and telegram, Facebook, instagram and other websites in this category. Video Games ranked third (16.19%), and their interest also increased slightly, with 15.98% from June 2019 to may 2020. However, visits to online stores (10.94%) were lower than the annual average (11.25%).

Children’s search activities highlight their interests and are closely related to the statistics of website visits. During the winter vacation, YouTube (20.84%) had the most searches. In terms of popularity, game related search ranked second (15.47%). Children also often search online translation resources (11.02%), the most popular is “Google translation”.

Software, audio and video

Despite a lot of overlapping interests, children from one area sometimes prefer certain content to their peers from other places. For example, children from South Asia (Bangladesh and India) showed the greatest interest in audio and video content (52.84%). In the CIS countries, only 39.2% of children have such content.

Video games

Video Games ranked third in the number of visits to websites by children around the world. Asian children (25.10%) were most likely to visit the game website. However, children in South Asia preferred video and audio content to games (5.21%).

Interest worth mentioning

In some areas, winter holidays are earlier than in others, which is why education (5.34%) is still a hot search topic. For example, English speaking children search “Google classroom” most often.
