The report shows that in the 2019-2020 academic year, the United States received more than one million international students for the fifth consecutive year, but the number of international students dropped by 1.8% this year.

India remains the second largest source of international students in the United States, with 193124 students, down 4% from the previous academic year.
In the report of overseas students’ expenses for studying abroad, 56.2% of the tuition fees come from individuals and families, 17% from American colleges and universities, 3.5% from non-U.S. governments and universities, and 21.1% from existing employers.
In the 2019-20 academic year, more than half (about 52%) of international students in the United States pursue stem majors (i.e., engineering, mathematics and computer science, physics and Life Sciences, health and agriculture).
Engineering is the main research area, and 20.5% of international students are still applying for this field.
Mathematics and computer science are the second leading research fields, with 205207 international students in this field, an increase of 0.9% compared with last year.
The biggest drop was in construction, with a drop of 53%; followed by communication technology, with a decrease of 20.9%. In addition, the number of education professionals is also decreasing.
Students from Chinese mainland have changed this academic year. The most frequently studied subjects are mathematics and Computer Science (21.2%). The second was business (17.5%), engineering (17.5%), Social Sciences (9%), and material and Life Sciences (8.4%).
The states that attract the most foreign students are California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
In terms of colleges and universities, New York University ranked first in terms of international students for seven consecutive years, followed by Northeast University, which was the second favorite university for international students.
