Support for local restaurants: consumers eat out less and order more

Globally, 63% of respondents said that the frequency of patronizing local restaurants had decreased compared with that before the outbreak. Latin America (79%) and North America (68%) saw the largest decline. On the other hand, only 54% of people in the Asia Pacific region eat out less.

More than 80% of consumers in Chile, Peru, Mexico and Argentina went out to eat most significantly. Of all 28 countries surveyed, Japan had the smallest decline (44%).

Globally, 23% of consumers eat local restaurant takeout more frequently than 45% before the pandemic.

In Latin America and North America, 30% and 27% of respondents ordered takeout more frequently than before the pandemic.

Japanese consumers (72%) are more likely to say that their take out and delivery eating habits have not changed, well above the global average of 45%. Hungary came in second (61%).

Support for local businesses: there is no change in the frequency of consumers shopping locally

Globally, many consumers (58%) talk about the frequency of face-to-face shopping in small businesses or local businesses without changing. At the global level, the frequency of consumers purchasing local goods has basically remained unchanged, with 61% of them purchasing goods from local farmers or manufacturers the same as before the outbreak.

78% of Japanese consumers said the pandemic did not change the frequency of their visits to small local stores. Half of shoppers in Turkey (54%) and South Korea (50%) said the frequency of face-to-face shopping at local businesses had declined, compared with the global average of 30%.

Globally, less than half of the respondents are more likely to shop online (43%). After the outbreak of the epidemic, consumers with high incomes (37%) were more likely than those with low incomes (49%).
