According to a survey of more than 1800 consumers conducted by salsify, 62% of them use customer evaluation as one of the basis for purchasing decisions. Other studies also show the importance of customer reviews in purchasing decisions. Ipsos, for example, found that about half of consumers trust customer reviews on sites like yelp or Amazon. Bazaarvoice found that shoppers trust customer reviews most, even though they value expert reviews. In other words, brands should be aware that if consumers think the reviews are fake, they may also delay buying.
Consumers also said that product images (40%), product ratings (38%), product size and material information (36%), and 360 degree or rolling images (25%) also helped to make online purchases. About 22% of respondents said user generated photos and real-life examples were also helpful, which was lower than bazaarvoice’s survey. In the latter survey, most respondents said they were more likely to buy products if they could see photos or videos taken by customers.
It is also worth considering that the primary reason for not buying products online is not providing enough product information or details (31%).
About half of the consumers (48%) said they would compare the prices of different retailers before buying, but 86% of the respondents were willing to pay more for the brands they trusted, and 3 / 10 of the consumers said they had already done so.
In addition, the primary factors for consumers to trust the brand include high-quality raw materials, materials and processes (40%), corporate social responsibility (27%) and good customer service (16%).
