According to sensor tower, consumer spending on the world’s top 100 non game subscription apps grew 34% year-on-year, from $9.7 billion in 2019 to $13 billion.

The highest paid non game subscription app accounted for 11.7% of consumer in app spending last year (US $111 billion), the same share as in 2019.

In 2020, U.S. consumers will spend nearly $5.9 billion to subscribe to the top 100 non game mobile apps, up 26% from $4.6 billion in 2019.

In 2020, U.S. consumers will spend $33 billion on in app purchases, with the top 100 subscription apps accounting for about 17.6%, down 3.4 percentage points from 2019.

Breakdown by app store

Historically, consumers spent more in the app store than in Google play store, and so did subscription apps. Globally, the top 100 subscription apps on the app store generated $10.3 billion in revenue in 2020, up 32% from $7.8 billion in the previous year. Google play’s top 100 revenue was $2.7 billion, up 42% from $1.9 billion in 2019.

Us app store non game subscription app spending will reach US $4.5 billion in 2020, up 25% from US $3.6 billion in 2019. In 2020, the US Google play subscription app will spend $1.4 billion, up 40% from $1 billion in the previous year.

Mobile game publishers will adopt subscription mode at a higher speed in 2020, with 8 of the 15 best-selling games offering periodic in app payment.

In the last quarter of 2020, the size of these apps was $1.7 billion, up 31% from $1.3 billion in the first quarter.
