Driving the digital revolution by improving mobile coverage From GSMA

The following is the Driving the digital revolution by improving mobile coverage From GSMA recommended by And this article belongs to the classification: GSMA, research report, Mobile Internet.

Increasing the coverage of the Internet is one of the great challenges of our time. At present, about half of the world’s population (46%) is not online. This limits people’s access to work, education, health care and, more broadly, the information they need to participate fully in social, political and economic life. In short, the key benefits of the digital economy are out of reach for too many people. Therefore, the communication industry and policy makers must work together to ensure that everyone is involved in the digital revolution.

Mobile technology has connected 3.8 billion people to the Internet. In low and middle income countries (LMIC), mobile is the main driver of Internet access. But more needs to be done to connect the rest of the planet. If the current trend continues, more than 40% of the LMIC population will not be connected to the mobile Internet by 2025.

Of the 4 billion people who can’t use mobile Internet, 3.4 billion actually live in mobile broadband coverage. The remaining 600 million people don’t even have Internet access because they live in areas without mobile broadband coverage. From 2014 to 2019, the proportion of people not covered by mobile networks has dropped from 24% to 7%. Having said that, the coverage gap has a greater impact on people living in low – and middle-income countries, especially in rural areas. In North America, for example, only 1% of the population lives in areas not covered by mobile broadband, compared with 25% in sub Saharan Africa.

In recent years, we have made the following progress in accelerating mobile network coverage:

Innovative technologies and deployment models help to expand mobile network coverage.

Policies and measures to support increased network investment and rapid wide area promotion.

Policies and measures to stimulate the demand for mobile Internet.

Policy measures are particularly focused on rural and remote mobile coverage.
