Ipsos has released a new report, “entrepreneurship during the pandemic,” based on a new survey of more than 20000 respondents in 28 countries. One third of the world’s adults show a high level of entrepreneurship. The characteristics of the index range from strong professional ethics to willingness to take calculated risks.

A survey at the end of 2020 shows that entrepreneurship varies from country to country. Colombia ranked first, followed by South Africa and Peru. Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, South Korea and Japan ranked lowest.

Since November 2018, entrepreneurship has grown fastest among women, generation Z, millennials and Generation X, as well as people with lower education levels.

Last year, three in 10 entrepreneurs started businesses and were inspired by the pandemic.

2. Women are at a disadvantage

Most citizens think that women are treated unfairly when they try to start a business, with the exception of five countries (China, Saudi Arabia, India, Malaysia and Turkey).

3. Neither the government nor the private / business sector actively assisted entrepreneurs

Only 29% of the respondents gave positive comments on government assistance to entrepreneurs.

In terms of helping enterprises, the positive evaluation of banks / financial institutions (32%) was not high.

4. Barriers to entrepreneurship vary from country to country

Lack of interest is the biggest obstacle for Canada, Belgium, the United States, Australia, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

In Chile, South Korea, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, France, Spain, China, Italy, Poland and Hungary, the economy is a high barrier.

Knowledge is also an obstacle in Saudi Arabia, Chile, India, Malaysia, Russia, China and Japan.
