The following is the Evaluation report on the development of China’s AI computing power in 2020-2021 From IDC & wave recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: IDC, artificial intelligence, research report.

IDC and Inspur jointly released the “2020-2021 China artificial intelligence computing power development evaluation report”. The report makes a comprehensive evaluation from the perspectives of AI computing industry development trend, market scale, regional computing power distribution and industry AI computing power guarantee degree, aiming to evaluate the current situation of China’s AI development and provide valuable reference and action suggestions for promoting industrial AI development. This is the third consecutive year since the report was released in 2018.

According to IDC report, China’s AI infrastructure market will reach US $3.93 billion in 2020, with a year-on-year growth of 26.8%. Among them, AI server market accounts for more than 87% of the total AI infrastructure market. With the rapid development of AI algorithm, more and more model training needs a huge amount of computing power to implement quickly and effectively. Computing power is the decisive factor to make a breakthrough in the application of artificial intelligence in the future. IDC predicts that China’s AI servers will maintain rapid growth and reach US $7.8 billion by 2024.

AI computing power becomes the decisive factor of AI breakthrough

In the three elements of the development of artificial intelligence, both data and algorithm are inseparable from the support of computing power, which plays an increasingly important role. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence algorithm, more and more model training needs a huge amount of computing power to implement quickly and effectively. At present, some models have approached the computing power limit of artificial intelligence. Gpt-3, the largest AI language model in the history recently published by openai, not only has the model size increased to 175 billion, but also the data volume has reached an amazing 45tb. On the one hand, for new tasks, it does not need to collect a large number of labeled data again, and the data utilization efficiency has been further improved; On the other hand, it can avoid the over fitting of the fine-tuning algorithm, which leads to the decline of the generalization ability of the model. And the key to the realization of this ability, to sum up, is to strive for miracles.

AI computing power is diversified, and the proportion of GPU servers is still as high as 95%

The report puts forward five important trends in the development of AI computing power in the future: first, AI chips will continue to show diversified development, and GPU will still be the first choice for data center acceleration, accounting for more than 95% of the market share; second, China’s AI servers will maintain high-speed growth in the next five years, which is the core driving force for the growth of the overall server market; Third, AI computing power will gradually penetrate to the edge. By 2023, nearly 20% of the servers used to handle AI workload will be deployed on the edge side. Fourth, AI cloud service (aiaas) has become an important driving force for the development of artificial intelligence market, and the annual compound growth rate from 2018 to 2024 is expected to reach 93.6%; fifth, AI benchmark is gradually improved, and authoritative benchmarks such as mlperf, spec ml and AI rank are launched one after another, which not only provides reference for the cost-effectiveness of enterprises, but also an important factor for the sustainable development of artificial intelligence applications in the future.

Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Chongqing are among the top 5 AI computing power cities

According to the list of Chinese AI cities in 2020 released in the report, the top five cities are Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Chongqing in turn, and the 6-10 cities are Guangzhou, Hefei, Suzhou, Xi’an and Nanjing. Compared with that in 2019, Shenzhen ranked second over Hangzhou, Chongqing ranked first, and Xi’an ranked ninth over Nanjing. In addition to the top 10 cities, many cities have made great progress in the application of artificial intelligence driven by their own industrial advantages and various factors, such as the intelligent manufacturing in Dongguan, the intelligent medical treatment in Wuhan, and so on; In the future, more and more artificial intelligence demonstration areas will appear, which will set a benchmark for industrial development.

From the novel coronavirus pneumonia industry penetration ranking, compared with 2019, the Internet remains the first, the telecom and manufacturing industries have more rich application scenarios, and the market potential is expected to increase greatly. In the first half of 2020, the medical industry accelerated the landing of AI applications under the influence of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, and achieved remarkable results in many aspects. The penetration of AI application in medical industry is higher than that in education industry, ranking seventh.

In addition to the industry with relatively concentrated investment in artificial intelligence, driven by business demand, many fragmented applications are also widely used, and radiate to media entertainment, modern agriculture, smart home, smart power and other different fields. On the whole, the general application scenarios including biometrics, intelligent customer service, and precision marketing have been quite mature. The industrialization of artificial intelligence has penetrated from point to area, from general application scenarios to more industry-specific scenarios. Industrial AI has gradually become the rigid demand for enterprise development and survival from the early pilot.

74.5% of enterprises just need public AI computing infrastructure

IDC survey shows that more than 90% of enterprises are using or plan to use AI in the next three years, while 74.5% of enterprises expect to use AI public computing infrastructure with public utility significance in the future. In the future, with the completion of more large-scale and inclusive AI infrastructure platforms, the whole Chinese AI industry will enter another fast lane of development – the rigid demand of enterprises determines the speed of AI development, and the construction of new public computing infrastructure widens the road for AI development.

In addition, IDC also investigated the common needs and challenges of enterprises in the application of artificial intelligence in this study. The main challenges faced by most enterprises are the lack of data required for model training, the lack of computing infrastructure, and the high cost of artificial intelligence application scheme. Therefore, the government as the representative of the main body of social services is very important in promoting the construction of artificial intelligence public computing infrastructure. We need to fully consider the current needs and pain points faced by enterprises, and work together with artificial intelligence ecological partners and key artificial intelligence infrastructure service providers to build a platform to accelerate industrial development.

From the perspective of global AI computing power development, China’s AI servers will account for about one third of the global AI server market in 2020, and will be the backbone of the global AI industry. AI computing capability reflects the most advanced innovation capability of a country. The investment in AI computing power also shows that the country attaches great importance to AI at the strategic level, and the enterprise hopes to enhance its core competitiveness through the development opportunity of AI.
