Since 1946, FAO has been working with Member States to monitor global forest resources through regular assessments. The information provided by the global forest resources assessment (FRA) shows the changes of global forests and forest resources in an all-round way. A clear global picture provides strong support for forest and forestry related policy making, project practice and investment activities.
Over the past 70 years, the public has become more and more interested in the state of global forest resources; at the same time, the scope of the reporting system is constantly improving and adapting to the changing information needs. FAO has adopted a more comprehensive perspective to assess all aspects of sustainable forest management (SFM).
Previous assessments were led by FAO, with very limited participation by countries. Since the 1980s, the assessment began to adopt a bottom-up approach. More and more countries have participated in the process of data collection and re classification, estimation and prediction according to the global common categories. At the same time, the technical methods used in the assessment have also been improved. The assessment is based on the analysis of data obtained from various countries, supplemented by expert evaluation, remote sensing and statistical modeling. In the assessment, the change trend of forest area and volume is becoming more and more important. Since the 1990 FRA, FAO has published its assessment results every five years.
Fra2020 examined the status and trends of more than 60 forest related variables in 236 countries and regions from 1990 to 2020.
Fra comprehensively shows the changes of the world’s forest status and forest resources. It provides a clear global picture for the forest and forestry sector to formulate appropriate policies, implement good practices and invest.
