Wealth-x released the global high net worth population report 2020. People with net worth between $5 million and $30 million are called high net worth people (vhnw). In 2019, the growth rate of high net worth population will exceed 10%, reaching 2.7 million, significantly faster than that of 1% in 2018. At the same time, the total net assets increased by more than 10% to 26.6 trillion US dollars.

In most major regions, vhnw and its total net worth increased. However, these benefits are not evenly distributed. North America is the world’s largest wealth center, with both vhnw numbers and total net assets increasing by about 15%.

In 2019, the US vhnw (up nearly 16%) and its total wealth account for about 36% of the global total. China and Japan also performed strongly, with vhnw wealth accounting for more than 60% of Asia’s total net worth.

New York is still far ahead of other cities, with 110170 vhnws in 2019. In second place, VH 735, far behind New York.

Although the VHNW population in mainland China and Germany is second and fourth respectively, the two countries do not have the city’s top ten in the world, which reflects that the wealth distribution of these two countries is more homogeneous than that of other leading countries. Excluding China and the United States, Turkey’s Istanbul and Ankara (capital) are expected to be the fastest growing rich countries in the next five years, with an average annual growth rate of about 17%.

85% of the vhnw population has created wealth entirely through their own efforts. 96% of China’s vhnw is self-made, while the vhnw wealth of Middle East and South Asian countries is more likely to come from inheritance or combination of inheritance and self creation.

From the perspective of gender, the proportion of women who inherit wealth or inherit and create additional wealth by themselves is far higher than that of men.
