Ericsson released a new report, “Networked Manufacturing: transforming industry 4.0 with dedicated cellular technology.”. According to the real world standards and experts’ opinions, five use cases are drawn to describe how the company can overcome challenges, improve manufacturing efficiency, improve productivity, reduce maintenance, and achieve return on investment. The use cases of deploying private cellular network to realize intelligent manufacturing include:

Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) for real time production chain automation

Cooperative robot (Cobot) can improve operation efficiency

Augmented reality (AR) is used for effective quality checking

Asset condition monitoring to improve uptime

Ericsson applied a benchmark factory to analyze these use cases: a medium-sized auto supplier in Western Europe, with annual revenue of US $100 million, about 500 employees and gross profit of 10%. The report estimates that the annual steady-state net worth of the benchmark plant will reach $6 million in the fifth year. All five use cases will be cost recovered in three to five years, and if deployed together, full return on investment can be achieved in just two years.

The report also describes the major challenges that manufacturers have to overcome to remain competitive: declining productivity and growth, supply chain disruption, recruiting the right people, and the burden of legacy machines and assets. Maintaining and reallocating wired fixed assets is also expensive. As manufacturers upgrade their infrastructure, the need for data security and prevention of network attacks has become a top priority. In order to meet the customer’s expectations of rapid customization, the factory must be very flexible so that it can quickly adjust production. Manufacturers increasingly see the value of private cellular networks, making their businesses more agile and competitive, and supporting the transition to industry 4.0 by connecting operational and quality data.
