The following is the South Asia economic report 2022 From World Bank recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Investment & Economy, research report.
The World Bank released the “South Asia economic report 2022”. The uneven recovery from the pandemic has made South Asian countries face multiple policy challenges. Although some countries are coping with rising inflation and difficulties in financing fiscal and trade deficits, the region must also develop a new way forward to address growing inequality, unleash new growth potential and adapt to the energy transition. In order to reshape the economy, the region inevitably needs to redesign the tax system, increase competition and challenge vested interests and existing gender norms.
Stronger headwind during recovery
Although the region’s economy is growing again, the recovery of various sectors, countries and people is uneven. Although the production and export of digital services have increased, other industries such as construction, transportation and tourism have not fully recovered in most countries. Although GDP growth in some countries has rebounded strongly, there are still humanitarian crises, political crises and balance of payments crises. Although highly skilled workers kept their jobs or found new opportunities during the pandemic, only some unskilled migrant workers returned to work in cities.
Develop a new normal road map
It is estimated that the GDP growth rate of South Asia in 2022 will be 6.6%, 1 percentage point lower than the forecast released by the world bank in January this year. The increase in import prices in 2022 will put further pressure on the region’s revenue and expenditure. Sri Lanka and Maldives are likely to be the most affected. Their oil imports as a percentage of GDP are the largest among all South Asian economies. 20% of Maldives’ tourists come from Russia and Ukraine.
Reshaping social norms on gender
South Asia lags behind other regions except the Middle East and North Africa in terms of gender equality. Many countries in the region have the lowest female labour force participation rate in the world, while other related forms of gender inequality are also at an adverse level of development. Over the past few decades, the number of people with traditional views has declined in most countries, and is now less than 50%.
