WIPO facts and data in 2020 From World Intellectual Property Organization

The following is the WIPO facts and data in 2020 From World Intellectual Property Organization recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: research report.

In 2019, about 65% (by category) of global trademark application activities were concentrated in the top five competent authorities. The trademark applications accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China (51.7%) account for more than half of the total global trademark application activities, and the applications are mainly from Chinese residents. The remaining four top five bureaus each account for less than 5% of the total.

The number of trademark applications accepted by China’s State Intellectual Property Office reached 7.8 million, followed by the U.S. patent and Trademark Office, with a number of 672681. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the above two bureaus have been the top two competent bureaus. However, the number of applications in China has increased significantly since 2006, from about twice that in the United States to almost 12 times in 2018 and 2019. This is largely due to the large number of trademark applications submitted by Chinese residents in China. The competent authorities in Japan (category 546244), the competent authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran (category 454925) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (euipo, category 407712) rank behind the above two bureaus.

The number of trademark application activities of all the top ten bureaus in 2019 is higher than that in 2018. The largest increases were Iran (+ 18.4%), Russia (+ 16.5%) and Turkey (+ 15.5%).

By calculating the number of trademark application categories per unit of GDP (US $100 billion), we can compare the trademark application activities of countries with different application systems (single category and multiple categories) and different economic scales. According to this calculation index, smaller countries such as Australia, Chile and Madagascar rank higher than some large countries with higher absolute orders of magnitude, such as India and the United States.
