The food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, headquartered in Rome, Italy, jointly with the International Fund for agricultural development, the United Nations Children’s fund, the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization, released the report on world food security and nutrition in 2020. According to current estimates, nearly 690 million people are hungry, accounting for 8.9% of the world’s total population, an increase of 10 million in one year and nearly 60 million in five years.

Novel coronavirus pneumonia is likely to worsen vulnerable groups because of the health and socio-economic consequences of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the report said. Preliminary assessment shows that novel coronavirus pandemic of 2019 may result in an increase of 83 million to 132 million of the world’s food shortage in 2020, depending on the economic growth prospects.

In addition to the regular assessment of food security and nutrition, the report also adds a forecast of the world outlook for 2030, assuming that trends over the past decade remain unchanged. The heads of the five agencies that issued the report pointed out that the goal of zero hunger, ending food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition by 2030 is still far away.

In terms of the proportion of undernourished people, the regions most affected by hunger are Africa (19.1%), Asia (8.3%) and Latin America and the Caribbean (7.4%).

The report also shows that the burden of various forms of malnutrition remains a challenge. Although some progress has been made in the related aspects of child growth retardation, low birth weight and exclusive breastfeeding, the rate of progress is still too slow. In all regions of the world, the problem of overweight in children has not been improved, while the problem of obesity in adults is increasing.

FAO called on all countries in the world to realize the transformation of food system and ensure economic and healthy diet.
