Tourism suffered hitherto unknown crisis in novel coronavirus pneumonia in 2020, and there was unprecedented health, social and economic emergency during the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

Due to extensive travel restrictions and a sharp drop in demand, international tourists are down 74% in 2020 compared with the previous year.

The collapse of international tourism means an estimated loss of $1.3 trillion in export revenue, more than 11 times the loss during the global economic crisis in 2009.

In 2020, the number of international visitors to the Asia Pacific region will decrease by 84%, about 300 million fewer than the previous year. Immigration to the Middle East and Africa fell by 75%. In Europe, the number of visitors dropped by 70%, more than 500 million international tourists; in America, the number dropped by 69%.

According to the latest survey by the expert group of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the prospects for 2021 are mixed. Almost half of the respondents (45%) believe that the outlook for 2021 is better than last year, 25% of experts expect a similar performance, and 30% expect the performance to deteriorate.

The overall outlook for a rebound in 2021 seems to have deteriorated. At present, 50% of experts expect a rebound only in 2022, compared with 21% in October 2020. The remaining half of respondents still believe that there may be a rebound in 2021, which is lower than the expectation of the October 2020 Survey (79% of respondents expect a recovery in 2021).

Experts predict that with more and more attention paid to domestic tourism and “slow travel” experience, the demand for open-air and natural tourism activities will continue to grow.

Looking ahead, most experts believe that it will not return to pre pandemic levels before 2023. In fact, 43% of respondents expect to recover in 2023, and 41% expect to recover to the level of 2019 in 2024 or later.
