Survey on salary and living status of programmers in China in 2021

The following is the Survey on salary and living status of programmers in China in 2021 recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: User Research.

According to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), the 47th statistical report on China’s Internet development was recently released. By December 2020, the number of Internet users in China had reached 989 million, an increase of 85.4 million over March 2020, and the Internet penetration rate had reached 70.4%.

By December 2020, the number of online education and online medical users in China had reached 342 million and 215 million respectively, accounting for 34.6% and 21.7% of the total Internet users. China’s online retail sales reached 11.76 trillion yuan, an increase of 10.9% over 2019. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods amounted to 9.76 trillion yuan, accounting for 24.9% of the total retail sales of social consumer goods. By December 2020, the number of online shopping users in China had reached 782 million, an increase of 72.15 million over March 2020, accounting for 79.1% of the total number of Internet users. The number of online payment users in China reached 854 million, an increase of 86.36 million over March 2020, accounting for 86.4% of the total Internet users. The number of online video users in China reached 927 million, an increase of 76.33 million over March 2020, accounting for 93.7% of the total Internet users. Among them, the number of short video users was 873 million, an increase of 100 million over March 2020, accounting for 88.3% of the total Internet users.

In 2020, novel coronavirus pneumonia and its epidemic prevention and control were played an active role in China’s Internet industry. It made an important contribution to China’s becoming the only major economic growth sector in the world, and GDP’s first breakthrough in the world’s billion dollar economy.

China’s Internet is developing particularly rapidly. Various products such as takeout, e-commerce and short video emerge one after another. The Internet model is constantly innovated, the integration of online and offline services is accelerated, and the pace of online public services is accelerated. Among them, promoting the rapid development of China’s Internet and the continuous growth of Internet users are inseparable from the hard work of a group of Chinese programmers.

preface

During the NPC and CPPCC sessions, including Tencent chairman and CEO Ma Huateng, chairman and CEO Robin Li of Baidu, founder and CEO Lei Jun of millet, a series of Internet technology giants put forward a series of proposals, focusing on the digital economy, automatic driving, network security, intelligent manufacturing and other subdivision areas, as if holding the digital password of the coming year. Open the door to a new world for us.

They are the beacon of the new world. Behind them are countless new world explorers. Programmers who pave the way for the future through fingertip code. All along, as a group of people’s concern, the rapid development of the Internet is inseparable from them.

In order to better adapt to the development situation of the times and use technology to improve life, the programmer Inn has conducted some surveys on the salary and living status of Chinese programmers, and conducted a detailed survey on nearly 550000 excellent programmers in 29 provinces, municipalities directly under the central government and special administrative regions such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong and Zhejiang. The detailed report is as follows:

1. Gender ratio of programmers:

For a long time, the group of programmers is mainly male, and the proportion of female programmers is very small. The survey also found that the proportion of male and female programmers in the programmer group was 90.6%: 9.4%, close to 9:1. Compared with the results of our programmer Inn survey in 2017 (92.62%: 7.38%), 2018 (92.4%: 7.6%), 2019 (93.3%: 6.1%) and 2020 (89.6%: 10.4%), the proportion of female programmers first increased and then basically remained the same, This is a very gratifying phenomenon. I hope more and more fairy daughters can join the team of programmers, match men and women, and work not tired!

2. Age distribution of programmers

As can be seen from the above figure, programmers aged 22-24 account for 11.2%, programmers aged 25-29 account for 42.5%, and programmers aged 30-34 account for 31.8%. These three young partners have become the backbone of the programmer group. Among them, most programmers aged 22-24 should be students who have just graduated from college. The proportion of programmers aged 35 and over is only 9.4%, less than one tenth, which also shows that the programmer team is mainly people under the age of 35.

With the increase of age, and we get married, have children and have our own family, the high-intensity work of typing code may not be suitable for us. However, the improvement of programming experience, management experience and other aspects in the previous decade or so has become its own advantage, and then turned to other positions rather than front-line programmers. Therefore, in our work, we should not only knock out the code, but also constantly improve our abilities in all aspects, lay a good foundation for changing our work direction after the age of 35, and gradually turn to architecture, management or other positions.

3. Marital status

Among the programmers surveyed, 45% were single, down nearly 9% from 2020. On the one hand, this is mainly related to the younger group of programmers, because programmers under the age of 30 account for 58.9% of the total in this survey. On the other hand, it also shows that the number of single programmers has decreased this year.

Therefore, students who like programmers’ little brothers and sisters, come to the programmer group to find your other half! Programmers are smart, careful, serious and responsible.

4. Programmer Education

In this year’s report, we added a survey on the educational status of programmers. As can be seen from the above figure, most programmers have bachelor’s degrees, accounting for 67.8% of the total. Programmers with master’s degree account for 7.3% and those with doctoral degree account for 0.4%. In addition, programmers with college and other degrees account for 22.3% of the total. From the data, the programmer group does belong to the highly educated group, which can be described as the mainstay of the Internet industry.

In addition, in this survey, the programmer inn also investigated the graduation school category of programmers. As can be seen from the above figure, 19.3 programmers graduated from colleges and universities. Among programmers with bachelor degree or above, 58.8% of the young partners graduated from ordinary colleges and universities, 19.3% graduated from 985 / 211 colleges and universities, and 0.4% graduated from foreign high-level colleges and universities.

This distribution is also consistent with the proportion of various types of colleges and universities in China.

5. Years of working as a programmer

From the above figure, we can see that the working years are 5-10 years, and adult programmers account for 43.4% of the programmer group, belonging to senior programmers. Programmers who have just joined the work account for 12% of the total, programmers who have worked for 2-4 years account for 33.1% of the total, and programmers who have worked for more than 10 years account for 11.6% of the total.

Compared with last year’s data, the number of programmers who have just worked has decreased significantly, and the number of programmers who have worked for more than two years has increased from 73.4% to 88%. It is likely to be caused by the impact of the epidemic and the reduction of enterprise employment demand.

6. Geographical distribution of programmers

According to statistics, Beijing has the largest number of programmers in China, accounting for 17.6%. Secondly, Guangdong accounts for 16.7%, Shanghai for 12.9%, Jiangsu for 9.9%, Zhejiang for 8.2%, Sichuan for 3.9% and Chongqing for 2.6%. Programmers in Guangdong are mainly concentrated in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Zhejiang programmers are mainly concentrated in Hangzhou. Programmers in Sichuan are mainly concentrated in Chengdu. Programmers in Jiangsu are mainly concentrated in Nanjing and Suzhou. Programmers in Fujian are mainly concentrated in Xiamen. In addition, Shaanxi has 3.0% programmers, mainly concentrated in Xi’an.

There is an interesting phenomenon worthy of attention. The distribution of programmers in Beijing has decreased from 24.1% in 2020 to 17.6 in 2021. The corresponding increase in the proportion of programmers in Shanghai, Guangdong and Zhejiang shows that some programmers are diverted from Beijing to these three provinces and cities for various reasons.

7. House purchase of programmers

As we all know, now the house price is very high, what about the purchase of programmers. According to our survey, 14.1% of programmers bought a house at home, 21.0% of programmers bought a house themselves, and 8.2% of programmers bought a house together. In addition, 22.7% of programmers are still renting, but they are already preparing to buy a house. Another 22.9% do not intend to buy a house for the time being and rent a house for the time being.

8. Living conditions and expenses of programmers

The programmer Inn conducted a survey on the living conditions of the programmer group. 30.0% of the programmers live in their own houses and do not need to rent houses. The small partners who rent houses account for 64.1% and others account for 3.9%. Among the programmers who rent houses, 66.3% rent together, and the remaining 33.7% rent a suite. Among the small partners who rent together, 67.6% rent a public bathroom ordinary bedroom and 32.4% rent a single bathroom master bedroom.

As can be seen from the above figure, among the renters, the rent is mainly between 1000-3000 yuan / month. For 8.6% of the people, the rent is 3001-4000 yuan / month. 10.3% of the people have a rent of 4000 + yuan / month. Xiaobian guesses that these people should have established a small family, or especially pursue the quality of life, and the salary should not be low. In addition, 8.2% of people rent 500-1000 yuan, 4.7% rent less than 500 yuan / month, and 0.4% are rented by the company.

9. Programmer’s company attributes

Our survey found that 73.0% of programmers work in private enterprises, which is also a normal phenomenon, because most good Internet companies are private. What makes us bright is that 8.6% of the programmers surveyed are freelancers.

Programmer Inn has always had a belief that free work is the general trend of the development of the Internet industry in the future. You are people in the forefront of the times! Moreover, affected by the epidemic, the proportion of freelancers has increased.

It must be emphasized that this is highly consistent with the data obtained by the programmer’s Inn. The programmer inn is a leading free working platform for programmers in China. It provides new technical manpower solutions for enterprises and employers to help everyone develop their own products.

We can also see from the data that 9.4% of programmers work in state-owned enterprises and 1.3% of programmers work in Sino foreign joint ventures or wholly foreign-owned enterprises. The overall proportion is not high and has decreased significantly compared with last year.

10. Programmer job hopping

According to statistics, we can see that programmers without job hopping experience account for 16.3% of the programmer group; The proportion of job hopping for 1-3 times is more than half, 60.1%; The proportion of job hopping for 4 times was 7.7%; The proportion of job hopping for 5 times was 8.2%; The proportion of job hopping for 6 times or more accounted for 7.7%.

We can see from the above figure that programmers who have worked for 1-3 years have less job hopping experience. With the increase of working years, the number of job hopping also increases, which is also in line with the market law. More than half of the programmers who have worked for less than three years have not had job hopping experience. Few programmers who have worked for four years or more have no job hopping experience.

We can also see from the figure that working for three years is a watershed. Whether we have worked for three years is closely related to whether we have job hopping experience. According to our analysis, there should be two main reasons for this. First, most companies generally sign labor contracts for three years. When they have worked for three years, one party will choose not to renew them. Therefore, working for three years is a watershed for job hopping. Another reason is that after working for three years, we also want to change a new environment and meet some new challenges, so there is a three-year watershed.

11. Programmers are good at languages

In this survey on the salary and living status of Chinese programmers, we investigated the programming languages that programmers are good at. Each participant in the survey can choose multiple languages that they are good at. As can be seen from the figure, there are many JavaScript programmers at the front end and Java programmers at the back end. This is also in line with the current market demand. There is a great demand for front-end engineers in the market. As for back-end Java, it has always been the highlight of the programmer market. In addition, python took the second place, accounting for 17.6%.

In addition, there are Android (9.9%), IOS (7.3%), PHP (14.6%), C + + (7.7%), c# (12.4%), C (6.0%) and other 6.0%. Of course, there are rising stars R language (2.6%) and go language (7.7%).

12. Programmer learning and working hours

In the in-depth contact and communication with programmers in the past few years, it is found that many programmers complain about the current situation that they don’t have much time to improve themselves because of their long working hours. Therefore, in this questionnaire survey, the programmer Inn specially added a survey on working hours and learning hours.

The above figure is about the time spent by programmers on work every week. We can see a very interesting phenomenon that 66.9% of programmers live an ideal working life of nine to five days a week, and only 33.1% of programmers work overtime to varying degrees, which is inconsistent with the remarks we hear about the serious overtime of programmers in this profession.

On this basis, less than one tenth (8.6%) of programmers work as long as 996 hours a week, or even longer.

As shown in the figure above, only 37.4% of programmers spend more than 5 hours a week on learning. The vast majority of programmers (40.5%) spend less than 5 hours a week on learning. Even 22.0% of programmers almost have no time to study every week.

There must be various reasons for this situation. On the one hand, the working hours of the company may be too long, on the other hand, the family affairs may be busy, and on the other hand, the personal learning state may not be ideal. But anyway, in the industry of programmers who rely on technology, it must be necessary to have a certain learning time.

13. Annual salary of programmers

From the survey results of programmer Inn, we can see that the annual salary of programmers is normally distributed, mainly between 50000-250000, accounting for 66.3%. The proportion of programmers with an annual salary of 50000-100000 is 15.5%, the proportion of programmers with an annual salary of 100000-150000 is 18.9%, the proportion of programmers with an annual salary of 150000-200000 is 21.9%, the proportion of programmers with an annual salary of 200000-250000 is 12.0%, and the proportion of programmers with an annual salary of 250000-300000 is 7.7%. In addition, programmers with an annual salary of 300000 or more accounted for 19.3%, and those with an annual salary of less than 50000 accounted for only 4.7%.

14. Programmer’s satisfaction with work, etc

The programmer Inn investigates the job satisfaction of programmers from two dimensions, including salary satisfaction and work environment satisfaction.

The above figure shows programmers’ satisfaction with their salary. From the above figure, we can see that 45.5% of them are not satisfied or very dissatisfied with their current salary. 41.2% think the current salary is average. Only 11.6% of programmers are satisfied with the existing salary, while 1.7% are very satisfied with the existing salary.

The above figure shows programmers’ satisfaction with their working environment. From the survey of programmers’ Inn, we can see that most people think their working environment is OK. Only 24.0% of programmers are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their working environment. 49.4% of programmers think their working environment is average, and 26.6% of programmers are satisfied or very satisfied with their working environment. This also reflects that Internet companies pay more and more attention to the construction of working environment. With a good working environment, everyone will be happier and happier. In addition, 6.4% of programmers are not satisfied with their current working environment.

15. Part time willingness of programmers

In this survey, the programmer’s Inn added a survey on the willingness of programmers to work part-time. 93.1% of programmers are willing to work part-time, of which 25.8% think they can try part-time, and 45.1% of programmers, although they have not done part-time, are very eager to wait. 17.6% of programmers are already doing part-time jobs, and 4.7% of programmers have become freelancers.

16. Programmers’ work affected by the epidemic

At the end of 2019, the outbreak of New Coronavirus epidemic broke out, which led to the failure of enterprises to return to normal after many years. Many Internet Co faced operational problems, and the impact lasted even until 2021. In view of this situation, the programmer inn also added a survey on layoffs at the end of this survey.

It can be seen from the survey results of programmer inn that 59.2% of people did not feel the tide of layoffs, but 32.6% of programmers were laid off or colleagues were laid off. 8.2% of programmers were laid off in this wave of layoffs. In fact, the collective layoffs of Internet companies also broke out in the second half of 2018. At that time, the programmer inn also conducted a survey according to the situation at that time. At that time, 9.0% of programmers were laid off, and they were not affected and they were not laid off, but the proportion of colleagues who were laid off was basically the same as this year.

Therefore, in fact, the impact of this epidemic on Internet companies is not as great as that of other industries, and the layoff rate of 8.2% is actually in line with the law of each year. Therefore, technology is the king. Take good exercise in technology, improve yourself and put yourself in an advantageous position. Of course, many programmers are laid off by the company’s unscrupulous means. We must resolutely resist this behavior!

summary

To sum up, although the geographical distribution has changed and moved southward in general, the domestic first tier cities are still the main aggregation of programmers, and a large number of programmers are also gathered in some economically developed second tier cities with dense science and technology companies. In terms of computer languages, Chinese programmers are most good at languages such as Java, JavaScript, python, Android and python, which is also in line with the popularity of computer languages in the world. In terms of salary, the salary of Chinese programmers is relatively high compared with other industries, with an average annual salary of more than 150000.

In terms of life, nearly 30% of programmers live in their own houses, and the rest spend more than 1000 yuan on renting, and most of them rent public sanitary ordinary bedrooms in the form of joint rent. It is worth mentioning that after work, the vast majority of programmers (40.5%) spend less than 5 hours a week on study, and even 22.0% of programmers have little time to study every week.

At work, 73.0% of programmers work in private enterprises and 8.6% are freelancers. For job hopping, 83.7% of programmers have experienced job hopping, an increase of nearly 10% over the previous year, and the salary after job hopping is relatively increased. There is a conclusion inconsistent with experience in this report, that is, the overtime phenomenon of programmers is not as serious as that expressed on the network. Programmers with working status of 996 and above account for only 8.6% of this survey.
