Recently, a study led by Swedish researchers showed that moderate and vigorous exercise can alleviate anxiety symptoms. Relevant papers are currently published in the Journal of affective disorders.
The subjects of the study were 286 patients with anxiety disorder. They were recruited from primary health care institutions in the north of Gothenburg and Haran counties. The average age was 39 years old, and 70% were women. Half of the patients lived in anxiety for at least 10 years.
By drawing lots, participants were assigned to 12 weeks of group exercise, both moderate and intense. The results showed that compared with the control group, their anxiety symptoms were significantly reduced, even if anxiety was a chronic disease.
After 12 weeks of exercise, most people in the treatment group went from baseline level of moderate anxiety to high anxiety to low anxiety level. Compared with those participants with low exercise intensity, the chance of improving anxiety symptoms increased by 3.62 times.

Previous studies have shown that physical exercise can significantly improve the symptoms of depression. However, so far, there is still a lack of a clear picture of how anxiety patients are affected by exercise. The current study is considered to be one of the largest such studies so far.
The researchers said that both treatment groups received 60 minute training three times a week under the guidance of physiotherapists. Courses include aerobics and strength training. The warm-up is followed by 45 minutes of 12 station cycle training, and finally ends with stretching. The researchers regularly used the Borg scale to verify the exercise intensity level and confirmed it through the heart rate monitor.
Nowadays, the standard treatment for anxiety disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychotropic drugs. However, these drugs usually have side effects, and patients with anxiety disorder often do not respond to drug treatment. The long waiting time of CBT will also worsen the prognosis.
“Primary care doctors need individualized treatment with few side effects and easy to prescribe. Our research shows that this model can include 12 weeks of physical training. Regardless of the intensity, this represents an effective treatment and should be provided to people with anxiety more often in primary health care,” said Maria Berg, the corresponding author of the paper and an associate professor at the University of Gothenburg.
