Rust survey report in 2021

The following is the Rust survey report in 2021 recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Industry information.

Another spring came, and the latest survey report on the current situation of rust language came as promised. A few days ago, the official blog of rust language released the survey report on the current situation of rust language in 2021. This round of survey was launched in December 2021. A total of 9354 respondents from 113 different countries and regions around the world received feedback. Based on these feedback, the following analysis results are obtained through statistical analysis.

Global community

In 2021, the scale of rust community continued to grow. The number of complete replies received in this survey also reached a record high, with 9354 respondents, about 1500 more than the total number of the previous year.

90% of respondents said they would use the rust language in all their needs, 5% mentioned that they had used rust but no longer used it, and 4% said they had never used rust.

This round of survey is available in 10 languages, of which 78% are filled in English, followed by simplified Chinese (6%), German (4%) and French (3%). Although most respondents chose the English version of the questionnaire, it covered a wide range of regions around the world and attracted developers from 113 different countries and regions. Among them, the United States accounts for the highest proportion, accounting for 24%; Followed by Germany (12%), China (7%) and the UK (6%).

But English is not the preferred language for all rustaceans. Nearly 7% of respondents said they were unwilling to use English for technical communication, and another 23% mentioned that English was ok, but it was better to use other languages. In addition to English, the most common preferred languages of rustaceans are simplified Chinese, German and French according to their place of residence. The developer groups that least like technical communication in English are from Japanese, simplified Chinese and Russian according to language.

Rust usage

The proportion of users of rust remains rising. Among those who used rust, 81% of respondents used it at least once a week, up from 72% in last year’s survey.

75% of users mentioned that they would use rust to write production ready code, but 27% of respondents said it was difficult to do so.

Overall, rustaceans seem to enjoy the process of programming with rust, and only 1% of respondents think rust is boring to use. In addition, about a quarter of respondents believe that rust lacks real advantages over other programming languages.

Rust’s professional application performance

Now, rust has been regarded as a powerful language that can be safely used in professional environments. Among the respondents who use rust, 59% occasionally use it in actual work, and 23% use rust in most coding. In contrast, only 42% of respondents actually used rust at work last year.

For many rustaceans, using rust in their work is a long way, but it is worth fighting for. First, 83% of respondents who actually use rust admit that it is “challenging”; However, it is not clear whether this challenge comes from the features of rust or simply because of the introduction of a new programming language. The good news is that only 13% of respondents believe that the actual application of rust language will slow down the development speed of the team, while 82% of respondents said that rust helped the team successfully achieve its development goals.

Moreover, the cost of using rust language is also satisfactory: only 1% of respondents think that using rust is unnecessary, and 79% of respondents think it is worth the money. When asked whether the development team will use rust again in the future, 90% of the respondents gave a positive answer. Finally, 89% of respondents who used rust at work said that the development team realized the fun of programming with rust.

As for the reasons why respondents use rust at work, the answer with the highest proportion is that rust can help users “build relatively correct and bug free software”, which is supported by 96% of respondents. In addition to correctness, performance (92%) has become another important reason for us to choose rust. Another 89% of respondents said that they chose rust mainly because of its highly praised security attributes.

It can be seen that rust is basically ready to meet the production challenge. Only 3% of respondents believe that using rust in the production environment is a “risky” behavior.

Realistic challenges

Overall, the annual survey shows that the rustaceans community is still growing healthily, but it also reveals many problems to be solved. The next most important improvement of rust is the compilation time. 61% of respondents said that this problem must be solved earlier. However, the efforts of the compiler team have not been in vain. Similarly, 61% of respondents said that the compilation performance of rust has been significantly improved in the past year. Other areas that need improvement are disk space (45%), debugging functions (40%) and GUI development (56%).

With the continuous introduction and improvement of various tools (such as trust analyzer, IntelliJ rust, etc.), IDE experience has become the most improved project of rust language in the past year, which has been affirmed by 56% of respondents.

However, the compiler error message received the highest evaluation, which was praised by 90% of respondents for its excellent actual performance. When asked about their concerns about the future development of rust, the number one answer given by respondents was that they were worried about insufficient use in the industry (38%). However, as far as the current situation is concerned, the application and promotion of rust in the working scenario is moving forward steadily, and the community seems to have found the right direction to solve this problem.

The next concern is the fear that the rust language will become overly complex (33%). On the contrary, a small number of respondents called for more additional functions in the language (especially those that have not yet entered the pipeline).

Finally, the third major concern is that rust practitioners fear the lack of strong support for the healthy development of language and community (30%). However, with the establishment of rust foundation and the gradual formation of its supporting structure, this problem should be solved. However, there is still a lot of concrete work to be done, which requires our joint efforts.

Future expectation

2021 can be said to be the most important year since the birth of rust. In this year, the rust foundation was officially established, the scale of the technology community is much larger than before, and the rust language continues to move towards the road to the future with solid steps.
