A proof of concept study published in the British journal Nature human behavior found that artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms may be able to propose a new mechanism for allocating resources among people.
For many years, there have been differences among philosophers, economists and political scientists on how to distribute the benefits of human cooperation.
This time, Christopher Summerfield, a scientist at deep thinking in the UK, and his colleagues trained an AI system to design a new mechanism for the redistribution of public goods. The research team first asked thousands of volunteers to participate in an investment game in groups of four. In the game, everyone will get different amounts of money, and need to decide whether to keep the money for their own use or share it for the benefit of the whole group, so that the shared funds can be returned to themselves with principal and interest.
The research team then trained the AI system to find a strategy to reallocate funds to individuals. The popularity of the strategy depends on the voting results of human players when deciding which strategy to choose to play again. This AI system has successfully found a strategy that gets more votes than the baseline strategy, such as redistributing funds equally to everyone, or returning them in proportion to their personal contributions. When the research team asked other human volunteers to act as the decision makers of redistribution, their strategies were not as popular as those of AI.
Although this study focuses on a special version of public goods game involving four people, researchers believe that future research can continue to expand the concept of AI and study whether it is effective for larger groups and more complex game scenarios.
