The nature index tracks the relevant research of cities on 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (sdgs), and ranks the contribution to urban sustainable development using the total scientific research output from 2015 to 2020. The top five cities are Beijing, San Francisco Bay area, New York metropolitan area, Baltimore Washington and Boston metropolitan area.

Beijing also ranks first in the world, especially the share of affordable clean energy (sdg7) is as high as 1241.53. Sdg7 is the strongest in Shanghai, with a share of 473.35, ranking second in the world. New York’s best performance goal is climate action (sdg13), with a share of 325.00, while Beijing (339.93) also has a strong performance in this goal. Baltimore Washington ranked first in the world in terms of good health and well-being (sdg3) (264.45), followed by Boston (228.04). The results published in the journal Nature index have the highest correlation with the three sdgs: sdg3 (good health and well-being), sdg7 (affordable clean energy) and sdg13 (climate action).

Among the top five cities with the fastest increase in the share of SDG related research output, Chinese cities occupy the top four, namely Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Two American cities, New York metropolitan area (No. 5) and Boston metropolitan area (No. 20), rank among the top 20.
