According to omdia’s latest “smart phone display panel market tracking report”, in 2020, the number of panels shipped to Apple’s smart phones has rebounded as a whole, and has increased in the past three years. Omdia predicts that in 2020, the number of panels exported to Apple’s iPhones will reach 207 million, an increase of 11% over 2019. As shown in Figure 1, demand for LTPS TFT LCD iPhones continues to decline, with panel shipments expected to drop to 104 million, down 16%. Although iPhone se2 was released in the first half of 2020, which led to the demand for LTPS TFT LCD panel, the overall demand for TFT LCD decreased due to the production suspension (EOL) of old iPhone products such as iPhone 6, 7 and 8 series, and the models of new iphone12 series without TFT LCD in 2020. However, due to the launch of the new iPhone 12 series, the panel factory’s shipment of flexible AMOLED to apple is expected to increase significantly by 85% to 103 million tablets.

Figure 2 shows the historical shipment changes of each panel supplier to Apple mobile phone. Japanese panel manufacturers, which supply LTPS TFT LCD panels, saw a decline in their shipments. However, thanks to the demand for flexible AMOLED iPhones, the shipments of LG display and Samsung display will increase.
The LTPS TFT LCD panel shipment of Japanese display company is expected to decrease by 15% (YoY) year on year to 57 million pieces. The 4-inch and 5.5-inch panels of the iPhone 6, 7, and 8 series have been discontinued since the end of 2019, and the shipment of 6.1-inch panels has also decreased. Sharp’s panel shipments also fell 8% year-on-year to 48 million tablets.
Although LG showed a decrease in LTPS TFT LCD panel shipments for iPhones, its mobile phone panel shipments to Apple increased 17% to 52 million units year-on-year. LTPS TFT LCD panel shipment is expected to decrease by 27% to 28 million units year-on-year, while AMOLED panel shipment is expected to increase significantly to 23 million units, up 361% year-on-year, thanks to the 6.1-inch AMOLED shipment of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 pro. LG is currently shifting its smartphone business from LTPS TFT LCD to flexible AMOLED; it is expected that LTPS TFT LCD business will end in the first half of 2021.
Samsung shows that AMOLED panel shipments for iPhones will also grow 57% year-on-year to 79 million units in 2020. Samsung has provided various AMOLED panels for AMOLED iPhones since 2017, and it is expected that the shipment volume will increase significantly in 2020.

As shown in Figure 3, AMOLED is becoming the main display technology for the iPhone and will continue to be used in the new 2021 iPhone series. Apple specially requires that the models in 2021 adopt low-temperature polysilicon oxide (ltpo) panel and thin-film packaged (TFE) on-cell touch panel enhancement technologies. Therefore, panel manufacturers are planning to shift LTPS panel production capacity to ltpo, and strive for sufficient production capacity for TFE on-cell touch panel.
Samsung is rapidly converting panel capacity from LTPS to ltpo. Ltpo needs to add 2-3 masks, so it is expected that the capacity conversion to ltpo will decrease by 10-15%. As a result, Samsung’s flexible AMOLED capacity for Apple’s iPhone is expected to change from 105000 LTPS substrates per month in 2020 to 45000 LTPS substrates and 50000 ltpo substrates per month in 2021.
LG is producing a flexible AMOLED based on LTPS, add on touch solution. Currently, touch panel manufacturers in Taiwan are providing this kind of external touch for iPhone. As a result, the top priority for LG to prepare for the 2021 iPhone is not the ltpo solution, but the development of the on cell touch panel on TFE. LG is preparing additional capacity for touch on TFE AMOLED modules to match LTPS AMOLED panel capacity. In addition, LG shows that it is very likely to start producing ltpo products in 2022.
BOE is still developing a 6.1-inch panel, and its next solution for the 2021 iPhone will be a touch on TFE touch panel similar to the LG display.
