According to a new study by the Pew Research Center, about one in five underemployed American adults said they resigned last year, and most of them believed that they left their jobs because of low wages, lack of promotion opportunities and disrespect at work. A survey conducted from February 7 to 13 showed that among people under the age of 30, the proportion jumped to 37%, more than twice that of people aged 30 to 49.
Most people who resigned last year – and did not retire – say they are now back in employment.
Other reasons cited by respondents for resigning include childcare issues, lack of schedule flexibility and lack of good benefits such as health insurance and paid leave.
The rebound in the US economy has led companies to rush to fill a large number of vacant jobs with limited labor. The combination of a tight labor market and a more general reassessment of jobs by many Americans has led to a surge in resignations.
Last year, 35% of people with a college education or below said that too short working hours were the reason for resigning, while only 17% of people with a bachelor’s degree or above said the same. One in five people without a four-year degree cited employers’ demands for a new coronavirus vaccine as a reason for resigning, more than twice as many as college graduates.
At the same time, compared with less educated people, American college graduates are more likely to say that they have higher income and more opportunities for promotion in their current positions. About a quarter of people in universities or less report that they currently have a low income.
