In the United States, physical activity (PA) among adolescents is declining; 75% of high school students do not meet the daily PA guidelines, which is particularly common among female students. However, a new study from the University of Georgia shows that cultivating a healthier school environment may promote teenagers’ sports activities.
According to janani R. Thapa, the lead author of the study, schools are crucial in helping adolescents form healthy behaviors, such as good eating habits. The same is true for sports.
The findings were recently published in the Journal of youth.
Thapa, an associate professor of health policy and management at the school of public health at the University of Georgia, said: “it has been found that school recess time, sports facilities and social environment will affect students’ sports activities.”
Georgia has developed policies and plans to increase sports activities in K-12 schools. Thapa has always been a key figure in the evaluation of these projects.
“Over time, the state has observed a decline in the level of physical activity of all adolescents, but a higher proportion of female junior and senior high school students,” she said
Thapa suspects that the school atmosphere may play an important role in determining the comfort of students participating in school sports or other sports activities. School atmosphere includes social support, safety, bullying and other factors.
“We don’t know much about the role of school atmosphere in sports activities,” Thapa said. “There must be obstacles faced by some student groups. Therefore, we want to investigate the differences between different genders.”
Thapa and her coauthors were able to test this relationship using statewide survey data from more than 360000 Georgia high school students, including questions about the level of physical activity and school atmosphere.
These data include eight characteristics of climate: school contact, peer social support, adult social support, cultural acceptance, physical environment, school safety, peer victimization (bullying) and school support environment.
In general, female students reported fewer sports activities than male students, with only 35% of female students being active, compared with 57% of male students. And from grade 9 to grade 12, the sports activities of male and female students are declining steadily.
However, when the school atmosphere is considered positive, both male and female students have more sports activities. A prominent problem is the impact of bullying. Female students who reported being bullied were more likely to participate in sports activities, while male students who reported being bullied were less likely to participate in sports activities.
Bullying is the only measure of school atmosphere, and there are differences between male and female students. The author said that this difference can be explained by different norms about exercise and male and female ideals.
Thapa said, “for example, female students who actively participate in sports and practice may not meet gender norms and may therefore face bullying.”
These findings suggest that K-12 schools that want to promote participation in sports activities should consider how to improve students’ sense of security in school and strengthen peer and adult support for exercise.
