One of the many effects of the pandemic is that working from home has become a routine for many people. But are employees taking advantage of the constant gaze away from the office and the bosses? In some cases, yes. A survey from e-conolight, an LED lighting company, asked 1000 Americans how much of their 40 hour workweek they actually spend at work.
Most participants (41.9%) said they spent 4-6 hours a day focusing on their work, while 34.1% thought the number was more than 7 hours. However, not everyone is so focused. 21.3% of the people only focus on working for 1-3 hours a day, 2.5% focus on working for less than an hour, and 0.2% don’t focus on working at all. Since they don’t do anything, they guess that they must have the kind of “can do” work.
Although 76% of the respondents spent more than four hours a day focusing on their work, 40% of the participants said they had four hours or more to leave their computers. What are they doing during this time? More than half (60%) of them took naps at work, 42% dated online, 41% had sex, almost half said they had drunk, and more than three-quarters went shopping online.
All of these sexual behaviors, as well as drunkenness and shopping, have had varying degrees of consequences: half of the respondents were late for meetings because of non work related activities, 44% were reprimanded, and 39% were fired because of their behavior. Most interestingly, 45.3% said they had worked for another company at work.
The survey shows how some people who suddenly find themselves working from home try to stay professional, or simply treat it as an extended vacation. It’s a lesson for 39 percent of people who lost their jobs because they did something they absolutely couldn’t do in the office.
