Kaspersky Lab released third quarter DDoS attack data:
The top three places of attack frequency and target share remained unchanged: China (71.20 and 72.83%), the United States (15.30 and 15.75%) and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China (4.47 and 4.27%).
The Netherlands and Vietnam are the new faces in the top 10.
In terms of target numbers, Asia’s interest declined significantly: Hong Kong fell 2.07 percentage points. However, China’s target share rose by 6.81 percentage points.
After improving in the second quarter, the number of attacks fell again in the third quarter. Moreover, the difference between the peak (323 attacks per day) and the anti peak (1 registration attack) increased dramatically.
In the third quarter, a two-week decline in DDoS attacks was observed in late August and early September. During this period, there are three anti peak periods (August 31 and September 1 / 7), with only one attack per day and less than 10 attacks on another five days.
DDoS botnet flooding was the most active on Thursday, but decreased significantly on Friday.
Although the third quarter was far behind the first quarter in terms of duration, there were two recorded attacks over 10 days (246 and 245 hours), and the number of attacks lasting 5-9 days increased, with 12 attacks lasting 121-236 hours.
There is no change in the distribution of attacks by type: SYN flooding remains the main tool (94.6%), and its share has remained virtually unchanged since the last quarter. ICMP attacks accounted for 3.4%, while HTTP flooding score was less than 0.1%.
Linux botnets still dominate, accounting for 95.39% of the total number of attacks, up 0.61 percentage points over the previous quarter.
