Research shows that web-based sexual extortion increased during the covid-19 pandemic

The following is the Research shows that web-based sexual extortion increased during the covid-19 pandemic recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: network security.
Research shows that cyber extortion has increased during the pandemic, men are twice as likely to be victims as women, and young people, black and Native American women and LGBTQ individuals are also at high risk. During the covid-19 pandemic, men were twice as likely as women to be victims of online blackmailers, who often threatened to publish explicit photos, videos and information about the victims they obtained.
This is the first new study published in the peer-reviewed journal victims and criminals.
A survey of more than 2000 adults in the United States shows that young people, black and Native American women and LGBTQ individuals are also at higher risk of such cybercrime.
The perpetrator can be a current or former partner, a stranger who hacked into someone’s photo or webcam, or an online dating liar.
Sexual harassment reported to the FBI increased during the pandemic, an important period of transition to a more digital life through telework and social networking, the researchers said.
Since the beginning of the arrogance epidemic, non-profit organizations, government agencies and legal professionals in the United States have also reported a significant increase in technology driven sexual violence.
However, while there has been increasing research in recent years on other forms of technology facilitated sexual violence, such as unauthorized (sometimes referred to as “retaliation”) pornography, sexual extortion has received little attention.
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to Florida International University (FIU) and the online civil rights Initiative (CCRI), the study asked 2006 people whether they had been victims of online extortion, which is defined as “threatening to expose nude or sexually exposed images in order to get someone to do something, such as sending more nude or sexually exposed images, Pay someone money or have sex.
4.5% of men and 2.3% of women said they had experienced sexual harassment since the beginning of the epidemic. This surprised the researchers, who had expected women to be the most at risk (but the fact that men are more likely to be hooked is the main reason for the high proportion of victims).
“There are several reasons why American men report being victims of sexual harassment more often than women during pandemics,” said researcher Dr. Ya Eaton, an associate professor of psychology at FIU and research director at CCRI.
“Recent studies have highlighted gender differences in unpaid care and family related work since the onset of the pandemic; during the pandemic, men are likely to spend more time online than women.”
Dr Eaton added that men’s tendency to be “less selective” in dating than women could also expose them to sexual harassment, noting that in general, men are more likely to be victims of online love scams.
The results also show differences in rates of racial and sexual harassment, with black women, Native American women and LGBTQ individuals – all three groups at higher risk of other types of sexual violence and coercion – at higher risk of sexual harassment.
Black and Native American women are about seven times more likely to be victims of sexual harassment than white women. The rate of LGBTQ respondents is three times that of heterosexuals.
Age is also a factor, with the highest proportion of people aged 18 to 29, perhaps because people in this age group are more likely to conduct sexual experiments and use technology.
The study also found that people who experienced sexual violence from their partners before the pandemic were more likely to experience sexual harassment during the pandemic. Strangers and romantic partners, both former and current, are the most frequent perpetrators of pornographic extortion.
The authors of the study say more needs to be done to determine why the risk of sexual harassment varies by race, age, gender and sexual orientation, and its impact on people’s well-being.
For example, it is possible that although women are less targeted than men, cyber extortion has a more harmful impact on women.
The researchers concluded that questions about technology driven sexual violence should be included in the tests used by clinical professionals to help identify victims in abusive relationships and then turn them to counseling institutions or other helpers.
Prevention is also important. ” “Teaching sex education programs based on consent, happy and healthy relationship communication and decision-making may reduce personal and technology driven sexual violence,” Dr. Eaton said
Limitations of the study include that the data consist only of self-reports and are collected only in the first year of the pandemic.
