As Europe is urgently looking for alternatives to Russian natural gas to prepare for the winter, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an option being actively pursued, resulting in a significant increase in import levels in the past few months. Germany previously relied heavily on natural gas imported from Russia, and recently even announced plans to build three liquefied natural gas import terminals.
So far, the United States has benefited the most from the change in energy policy. The EIA (energy information administration) announced this week that in the first six months of 2022, the United States has become the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, 71% of which is exported to Europe. As the following information chart shows, even before the war in Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis, the United States was already one of the largest exporters of liquefied natural gas.
In 2021, Australia became the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas with an export volume of 108.1 billion cubic meters. Qatar ranked second, followed by the United States. In 2021, China was the world’s largest importer of liquefied natural gas. Last year, China imported 109.5 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas. Next to China is Japan, with a total import volume of 101.3 billion cubic meters. In 2021, the total global trade volume of liquefied natural gas reached 516billion cubic meters.
