The following is the Research shows that covid-19 patients are 55% more likely to experience serious cardiovascular events within one year after rehabilitation From University of Washington recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Medical health, novel coronavirus.

A large-scale new study in the UK found that 500000 subjects were followed up for a year after covid-19 infection, with both good and bad news. The study found that patients with covid-19 had a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular problems and new diabetes diagnosis in many weeks after infection. However, this risk did return to baseline after a few months.

In addition to the acute challenge of covid-19 and the obvious persistence of long-term covid, researchers increasingly see that convalescent patients are more likely to suffer from stroke, diabetes and heart disease within a few months after infection. However, the long-term results of covid-19 are still unclear.

Earlier this year, one of the largest longitudinal studies on this topic was published. The University of Washington has followed up about 150000 covid cases for 12 months. These subjects were 55% more likely to experience serious cardiovascular events within one year after rehabilitation.

The new study, led by a team at King’s College London, studied the health records of 428650 covid-19 patients in the UK. Each patient was demographically matched with the control group, and two specific health outcomes were tracked within 12 months after covid infection: newly diagnosed cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

In order to more accurately describe the time risk of covid within a few months after infection, the follow-up period was divided into three categories: acute covid (the first four weeks after infection), acute covid infection (5 to 12 weeks after infection) and long-term covid (13 to 52 weeks after infection).

In terms of new diabetes diagnosis, the study found that the risk of patients increased by 81% in the first four weeks after covid-19 infection. In the first three months after covid infection, the risk of diabetes remained about 27% higher than the average level, and then returned to baseline within about five to six months after the initial infection.

The risk of cardiovascular events was tracked along a similar timeline, with a sixfold increase in diagnosed heart disease in the first month after infection. This increased risk decreased slowly in the next few weeks and returned to the baseline level within three months.

Emma rezel Potts, the lead author of the study, explained: “using a large national electronic health record database from primary care allows us to describe the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in the acute and long-term stages after covid-19 infection. Although covid-19 patients are most prone to these results in the first four weeks, the risk of diabetes remains increased for at least 12 weeks.”

Although the cardiovascular complications associated with covid-19 have been well described, it is still unclear how the disease affects the incidence of diabetes. Some people assume that due to covid’s contact with the health system, doctors have caught more undiagnosed cases of diabetes, but others believe that sars-cov-2 may directly or indirectly damage pancreatic cells and accelerate the onset of diabetes in those who already have the disease tendency.

Ultimately, it will take time and further research to understand the long-term effects of one or more covid-19 infections. Ajay Shah, co-author of the study, said the findings should help doctors and patients pay attention to these conditions when recovering from acute cases of covid.

Shah said, “the information provided by this large-scale population-based study on the long-term impact of covid-19 on the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is very valuable for doctors who manage a large number of patients who have suffered from covid-19 so far. It is clear that at least the first three months after covid-19 need special vigilance.”

The new study was published in PLoS Medicine.
