The report shows that Huawei applied for 3544 patents from EPO last year, becoming the enterprise with the largest number of patents from EPO last year. Samsung and LG from South Korea ranked second and third with 3439 and 2422 items respectively. In 2020, Samsung Electronics topped the list with 3276 patent applications, but it was overtaken by Huawei in just one year. LG will maintain its ranking in 2020.
The report shows that last year, the number of patent applications received by EPO totaled 188600, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%. Among them, the field of digital communication increased the most, with a year-on-year increase of 8.2%, followed by medical technology (an increase of 8.1%), computer technology (an increase of 7.8%), while electronic machinery ranked fourth with an increase of 6.4%.
In terms of countries, the United States has the highest proportion of patent applications, reaching 25%, ranking first in all countries. Germany and Japan ranked second and third with 14% and 11%. China applied for 16665 patent applications to EPO in 2021, ranking fourth with 9%, once again setting a new high in the number of patent applications of China in the European Patent Office. The data with a year-on-year increase of 24% has the highest increase among the 30 major patent application countries.
