Recently, Accenture, an internationally renowned consulting company, released the 2021 Accenture digital transformation index of Chinese enterprises (hereinafter referred to as the report), saying that the digital transformation level of Chinese enterprises has been steadily improved and their sustainable development ability has been continuously enhanced. The report was jointly completed by Accenture and the national industrial information security development research center under the Ministry of industry and information technology. The way to break the situation: the digital level continues to improve

Digital transformation and green transformation have become national strategies, effectively stimulating the demand and endogenous driving force for enterprise transformation and upgrading and promoting sustainable business growth.

This trend is fully reflected in the report. Accenture built the Chinese enterprise digital transformation index in 2018. Over the past four years, the average score of the index has increased from 37 to 54. The overall digital level of Chinese enterprises in various industries has improved steadily, and more than half of the journey. Digital industrialization and industrial digitization have achieved initial results. Digital transformation is becoming an important driving force for high-quality and sustainable development of China’s economy.

From the perspective of industry segmentation, the digital transformation of traditional retail, logistics and electronic parts and materials is faster. From the perspective of enterprise segmentation, the leading enterprises in transformation have shown strong resilience under the impact of the epidemic because of their good digital foundation. The proportion has increased significantly to 16%, and their digital advantages over other enterprises have continued to expand to as much as 35%. Leading enterprises have more successfully transformed digital advantages into financial advantages, and the revenue growth gap with other enterprises has expanded from 1.4 times to 3.7 times before the epidemic. The digital transformation of Chinese enterprises is entering a watershed of strong and weak differentiation.

Difficulties in Transformation: there are still cognitive deviations in the digital strategy

Compared with the excellent performance of leading enterprises, the report points out that the satisfaction of non leading enterprises with digitization has decreased significantly. The gap not only has the sense of urgency brought by the demonstration effect of leading enterprises, but also is inseparable from their own transformation difficulties. In order to help Chinese enterprises find pain points and meet difficulties in digital transformation, Accenture conducted in-depth interviews with executives of more than 30 enterprises from March to July 2021, and summarized three major challenges faced by enterprises in the process of digital transformation.

The biggest challenge lies in the absence of strategy and misunderstanding. Some enterprises understand digital transformation as optimizing the IT foundation rather than building a digital base, and are not clear about the direction of digital transformation. Some enterprises fail to fully realize that the core of digital transformation is business transformation. Digital strategy and business development are “two lines and two layers”, and the enterprise development strategy lacks guidance on the direction of digital deployment.

“Once there is a deviation in strategy and understanding, many enterprises’ digital transformation, the first is’ piecemeal ‘, there is no coordination with each other, resulting in a waste of resources. The second is that the value output of the transformation to the business is not obvious, so it is difficult to give full play to the enabling role of the business”, pointed out Zhu Hong, member of Accenture Global Management Committee and chairman of Greater China.

The difficulty of digital capacity-building also restricts some enterprises with weak transformation base. Compatibility problems often occur when repairing on the basis of the original system. It is easy to cause bone breaking losses to the operation and fall into a dilemma. In addition, due to the systematicness of digital transformation, digital investment has a slow effect and a long cycle, which makes it very important to adhere to the long-term principle and maintain the sustainability of digital. However, some enterprises are often eager to see results, and the measurement of transformation value also makes it difficult for some enterprises to invest continuously, which ultimately affects the transformation results.
