Microsoft released a new report “2022 job trend index”, which analyzes that technology can help front-line workers open a new future. Over the past two years, Microsoft has been studying how the work has changed in order to understand how technology solutions can better support customers’ needs. Looking forward to 2022, Microsoft has made an in-depth study of a part of the labor force that has never worked from home, that is, front-line workers.

They represent 80% of the global labor force, and no one can undertake more than the 2 billion front-line workers in the world in the past two years. They maintain grocery store inventories, ensure that the power grid remains operational, provide basic health care services, and manufacture and distribute products on which the world depends.

Although they play an important role in every industry, these workers have traditionally been denied technical services. Just as the pandemic is a catalyst to stimulate the rapid digital transformation of information workers, the data show that front-line workers are at a similar inflection point.

Main findings

1. Caring culture: 76% of employees feel connected with each other, but more than 60% think their company can take more measures to give priority to culture and communication. In addition, 51% of front-line non management employees did not feel valued.

2. Front line workers are at a turning point: front line workers take better pay and benefits, work life balance and flexibility as the primary reasons for changing jobs.

3. Optimism about science and technology is high: 63% of front-line workers are excited about the employment opportunities created by science and technology, which ranks third among the factors that workers believe will help reduce work pressure.

4. There are opportunities to bridge the gap between technology and training: 46% of front-line employees feel the pressure to adapt to new technologies for fear of losing their jobs, and 55% of respondents said they must learn new technologies at any time without formal training or practice.
