Mobile core network has evolved from 4G EPC to 5gc, and great changes have taken place in the form of network elements, network architecture, signaling protocols, service capabilities and so on.
In terms of network element form, 4G EPC is mainly physical network element form, which is usually implemented based on special hardware, and the module granularity is large. 5gc mainly takes the form of virtualized network elements, especially the virtualization of control plane network elements is relatively mature. It supports cloud native deployment. 5gc vnf can be deployed based on shared cloud resource pool.
In terms of network architecture, 4G EPC adopts a closed architecture with relatively stable topology and connection relationship. Cross provincial signaling is usually implemented by convergence and transfer. The 5gc control plane adopts an open architecture based on SBA, which has smaller service granularity and can flexibly add new services. The network topology supports dynamic changes. Inter provincial signaling can be queried through NRF cascading, and then can communicate directly.
In terms of signaling protocol, diameter protocol is used in 4G EPC control plane, while httpv2 is used in 5gc control plane.
In terms of service capability, 5g supports three application scenarios: embB (enhanced mobile broadband), mmtc (massive connection) and urllc (low delay and high reliability). In addition to supporting 2C service, 5g can better support 2B service through network slicing, edge computing and other capabilities. In terms of 4G network architecture, there are still many applications oriented to the Internet of things.
