The WTO Secretariat yesterday released an update on dealing with trade in medical products in the context of covid-19. The update provides data on trade in medical products covering the whole year of 2020.

Following the revised statement issued on December 22 last year, the latest update released by the WTO Secretariat includes the trade statistics of medical products in 2020 from about 100 economies, as well as the comparison with the trade statistics in 2019.

The report also includes a special case study on diagnostic reagents and detection kits, which are key products for monitoring the epidemic situation of the virus and are important barometers for governments to determine policies to prevent and control the covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the total import and export of medical products will be 2343 billion US dollars. Compared with the previous year, it increased by 16%. In contrast, the value of world merchandise trade shrank by 7.6% in 2020.

In March 2020, when covid-19 becomes a global pandemic, trade in detection kits and diagnostic reagents will increase dramatically. In December 2020, the monthly growth rate of exports and imports will reach 90% and 126% respectively. Singapore and Lithuania are among the top 10 exporters of such products.

The share of medical products in world trade will increase from 5.3% in 2019 to 6.6% in 2020.

Global trade in goods critical to the pandemic, such as masks, ventilators, sterilizers and ultrasound scanners, will grow by 31% in 2020.

China will become the largest exporter of key medical products of cowid-19 in 2020. The total value of China’s exports in the whole year is 105 billion US dollars, about 2.8 times of that in 2019. Malaysia ranks among the top ten exporters in 2020, with a year-on-year growth of 52%.

The world’s top ten exporters account for about three-quarters of the world trade in key products of cowid-19, while the top ten Importers account for 62% of the world’s imports.

In the COVID-19 with the highest incidence rate, diagnostic reagents and detection kits accounted for 10% of the import cost per capita of COVID-19 key products.
