As cyber criminals adopt more sophisticated tactics, blackmail software attacks are increasing worldwide, foreign media VentureBeat reported. The FBI reports that the total loss of blackmail software in the United States increased by 225% in 2020. According to the network security risk company, enterprises are attacked every 11 seconds on average, and the global loss is expected to reach 20 billion US dollars. In this context, cybereason global blackmail software research measures the financial and reputation losses caused by these attacks.
Dealing with the consequences of a blackmail software attack can be complex and expensive. The vast majority of organizations have experienced significant business impacts due to blackmail attacks, including loss of revenue (66%), damage to the organization’s brand (53%), unplanned layoffs (29%), and even complete closure of business (25%).
The top five solutions include security awareness training (48%), security operations (SOC) (48%), Endpoint Protection (44%), data backup and recovery (43%) and e-mail scanning (41%). The least deployed solutions include network scanning (40%), endpoint detection and response (EDR) and extended detection and response (XDR) technologies (38%), antivirus software (38%), mobile and SMS security solutions (36%), and managed security service provider (MSSP) or managed detection and response (MDR) providers (34%). Only 3% of respondents said they did not make any new security investment after being attacked by blackmail software.
Cybereason’s research found that most of the organizations that chose to pay ransom in the past were not immune to subsequent blackmail software attacks, which were often carried out by the same threats. In fact, 80% of the organizations that paid the ransom were attacked twice, and almost half were attacked by the same threat group.
This study provides insight into the business impact of blackmail attacks on major industries and reveals data that can be used to improve blackmail defense. For example, the first two solutions include security awareness training (48%) and security operation (48%) after blackmail attacks. The study emphasizes that prevention is the best strategy for managing the risk of software blackmail and ensures that organizations will not be victims of software blackmail attacks in the first place.
1263 cyber security professionals participated in the study commissioned by cybereason and conducted by censuswide, with participants from different industries in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
