BLUEDOT released the holiday habits report 2020. The new study, based on a survey of 1500 U.S. consumers last month, looked at consumer habits and behaviors during the fast approaching holiday shopping season. Mobile apps, roadside pickup and online in store pickup (bopis) are all crucial initiatives, as retailers are eager to maintain market share during the highly uncertain holiday shopping season, according to the survey.
80% of consumers said the continued pandemic will increase the number of gifts they pick up from the roadside. The relatively new retail service has yet to meet customer expectations, with 60% of consumers expecting staff to deliver their orders to their cars, but only 30% are currently enjoying the service. Bopis is also attractive to consumers because two thirds of respondents plan to use the same or more of the service this year.
Surprisingly, 75% of consumers plan to use mobile apps for at least half of their holiday shopping this year. Research also shows that the number of mobile app downloads for holiday shopping has increased, with half of consumers likely to download two or more new apps during the shopping season.
It is also worth noting that the vast majority of consumers (92%) are concerned about the health and safety precautions taken by stores. Consumers also pointed out that excessive waiting time and long queues are the main safety hazards of holiday shopping.
Intergenerational and gender differences
Compared with generation X (49%), baby boomers (45%) and generation Z (42%), 58% of millennials expect to spend 75% of their holiday shopping through mobile apps this year.
Generation Z is the only one to list masks and gloves as the highest safety requirement for roadside pick-up, followed by the minimum waiting time. Other generations have listed the minimum waiting time as their highest security requirement.
When shopping in stores, men are more likely than women to think wearing protective clothing is safer.
