Facebook’s position among U.S. consumers and smartphone users is threatened by instagram, according to a new report from the audience project.

About 17 percent of consumers aged 15 and over think Facebook is one of the three apps they can’t have. 13 percent of respondents thought it was instagram.

What’s more, while the battle between Facebook and instagram continues, WhatsApp has risen five places to No. 8, compared with only one fifth of American adults using it last year. Meanwhile, Messenger, which ranked sixth in 2019, fell to 10th this year.

Gmail and Youtube apps once again held third and fourth places this year, respectively, while other apps ranked:

Twitter: up 2 places, ranking 5th;

Chrome: up 5 places, ranking 6th;

Google Maps: up 1 place, ranked 7th;

Amazon: up 1 place, 9th.

Instagram has won the support of young people

Among respondents aged 15-35, instagram topped the list with more usage than Facebook.

In fact, 15-25 year olds are particularly obsessed with instagram, with 27% of respondents saying it’s one of the three apps they can’t afford without. Facebook has fallen all the way to No. 5 after YouTube (No. 2), snapchat (No. 3) and twitter (No. 4).

Eight out of 10 Americans use Facebook’s social media

Americans feel they can’t do without Facebook apps on their phones, but YouTube is already at the forefront of social media use. In 2020, 72% of Americans use YouTube (up from 68% in 2019), slightly higher than Facebook, which has been at 71% for the past two years.

Only half of those aged 15-25 use Facebook, while slightly more than three-quarters (77%) use YouTube.

Audienceproject points out that 83 percent of Americans use social media platforms owned by Facebook (Facebook, instagram and / or WhatsApp), while 81 percent use only Facebook and / or instagram.
