The following is the Research shows that lack of sleep can lead to negative, intrusive thoughts From York University recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Life data.
According to foreign media reports, if you often struggle with unwanted negative or unpleasant thoughts, the underlying reason may be poor sleep quality, according to a new study by York University. People who don’t get enough sleep are less able to suppress negative and unwanted thoughts than people who get enough sleep, which may make existing mental problems worse, the study reported.
It is understood that 60 healthy people participated in the new study, whose task was to associate portraits with neutral or negative scenes. The participants were then either given a normal sleep or deprived of sleep. In this state of lack of rest or sleep, the researchers showed the pictures to participants and asked them to suppress the thoughts associated with them.
The results showed that the sleep deprived group found it difficult to suppress unwanted thoughts – and, unlike the rest group, it was difficult for sleep deprived subjects to stop these invasive thoughts even through practice.
In addition, the sleep deprived group did not see any positive change in their perception of the negative scene over time, nor did the rest group. The results emphasize the importance of proper and healthy sleep for mental health. Lack of sleep may exacerbate emotional problems and invasive thoughts, which are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, the researchers noted.
Lead author Dr. Marcus Harrington, who led the study, explained: “in everyday life, ordinary experiences remind us of unpleasant experiences. For example, a car driving too fast on a freeway may remind us of unwanted memories from an accident many years ago. For most people, thought disruption will pass quickly, but for those with mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they certainly need to face repetitive, uncontrollable, and painful emotions. Obviously, the ability to suppress unwanted thoughts varies from person to person, but so far, the factors driving this change have been a mystery. Our research shows that lack of sleep has a considerable impact on our ability to get rid of useless ideas
