On December 7, 2021, Gartner’s latest research revealed that infrastructure and operations (I & O) leaders must begin to prepare for six trends in the next 12 to 18 months.
Jeffrey Hewitt, vice president of research at Gartner, said: “Infrastructure and operations leaders need to drive change, not just absorb it. They need to be able to provide more adaptive and flexible services to an increasingly dispersed workforce anywhere. This is forcing infrastructure and operations leaders to take action and make decisions more in line with business needs, which is a theme that runs through trends this year.”
The following are major trends affecting infrastructure and operations in 2022:
Trend 1: just in time infrastructure
The speed of infrastructure deployment is becoming as important as deploying the right infrastructure in the right place (hosting center, data center, edge, etc.), which is the foundation to support the just in time infrastructure.
The name of this trend draws on the term “just in time production”, which will reduce the deployment time of infrastructure and promote the responsiveness of enterprises to business needs and operations everywhere. Gartner expects that this trend will become a differentiation factor when enterprises compare and negotiate with service providers.
Trend 2: digital natives

Trend 4: Data proliferation
The type, speed and quantity of data will continue to increase exponentially. As enterprises continue to expand their data collection and retention efforts, infrastructure and operations leaders will play an important role in policy guidance around enterprise data processing, retention and legal requirements.
“Infrastructure and operations staff need to work closely with their chief data officer to expand data literacy and effectively support enterprise wide data management,” Hewitt said
Trend 5: business acumen
Infrastructure and operations leaders are guiding their departments to adapt to a rapidly changing distributed technology environment that is facing the challenge of IT talent gap and needs to supplement new skills. According to a recent Gartner survey *, 64% of infrastructure and operations leaders said that lack of skills and resources was one of the biggest challenges they faced in the past year.
“The application period of technical skills is shortening. As infrastructure and operations departments are required to provide more legitimate business reasons for their actions, the new employees of infrastructure and operations organizations are looking for should have a business background rather than a technical degree,” Hewitt said
Gartner expects that by 2025, CIOs will hire people without infrastructure and operations experience to fill 65% of vacant infrastructure and operations leadership positions.
Trend 6: from career ladder to career lattices
Similar to the trend of business acumen, infrastructure and operations are moving away from a single field career path dominated by workload and traditional technical skills. In fact, according to Gartner talent neuron, 29% of the skills required for general infrastructure and operations recruitment in 2018 will no longer be needed by 2022.
Instead, the infrastructure and operations teams will select talents according to the ability grid that considers soft skills and emphasizes learning agility and cross domain technical expertise.
“Although this trend requires some infrastructure and operations workers who work longer hours to adjust their thinking patterns, opportunities within the infrastructure and operations team will increase significantly when they get rid of regional thinking and start cultivating a collaborative environment,” Hewitt said
