According to the data updated by IC insights, despite the economic difficulties this year, due to the increase of average selling price (ASP), the total sales of microprocessor (MPU) is expected to increase by nearly 12% in 2022, reaching a record $114.8 billion.
The total shipment of MPU this year increased by only 3%, which will drive the sales of nearly 2.5 million processors to a record high after an increase of 6% and 5% in 2021 and 2020 respectively. In the second quarter update, it is estimated that MPU revenue in 2022 will be driven by ASP growth (8%), following the average price growth of 7% last year and 10% in 2020.
In 2021, the market share of the five largest microprocessor suppliers totaled 86% of the global $102.7 billion MPU sales. The next five largest MPU suppliers (NVIDIA, Samsung, Ziguang zhanrui, Hisilicon and NXP) accounted for 4.3% in total.
It is worth noting that the MPU ranking of IC insights is based on the sales of computer CPUs, embedded microprocessors and mobile application processors, but does not include coprocessors.
Although the total market share of the top five suppliers has increased steadily in the past 10 years, the income gap between Intel, the long-term MPU leader, and the other four largest companies continues to narrow. IC insights estimates that Intel’s microprocessor revenue increased by only 3% to $52.3 billion in 2021, accounting for 50.9% of the total MPU market share last year, compared with 55.7% in 2020 and 58.4% in 2016. AMD’s MPU sales soared by 56% in 2021, reaching US $9.2 billion, and its microprocessor market share increased from 6.5% in 2020 and 3.3% in 2016 to 8.9% last year.
