To further explore this idea, the team conducted a separate pilot study involving 10 subjects, half of whom performed 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, such as cycling or jogging, before cognitive behavioral therapy for an hour a week. The second group just carried out their regular activities, which lasted eight weeks.
At the end of the project, depressive symptoms improved in both groups, but the reduction in depressive symptoms was more pronounced in the exercise group. The group reported that their connection with the therapist was faster and stronger, making it possible for them to gain more from the treatment and continue to participate in the treatment. According to the team, these results suggest that a brief exercise before treatment may prepare the brain for emotional challenges and amplify its benefits for patients with depression.
“In such a small group, we did not conduct formal statistical tests, but the results are promising,” Meyer said. “Overall, pilot studies have shown that people are interested in and will adhere to this comprehensive approach, and exercise seems to have some impact on depression and some treatment mechanisms.”
