In the division of working hours, the researchers divided the working hours per week into five grades “< 35 hours", "35-40 hours", "41-48 hours", "49-54 hours" and "≥ 55 hours".

Because the EU working hours directive (2003 / 88 / EC) guarantees the right of employees to limit the working hours per week to 48 hours, which means that more than 48 hours is considered overwork. "≥ 55 hours" is defined as "long-time work".

Under the preliminary analysis, 2747 of the 599 participants (4.6% of the total) were defined as long-time work. This long-time work pattern accounted for 9.6% of male participants, much higher than that of women (2.9%), and was more common in lower socio-economic groups.

In general, the average follow-up time of disease in long-time working population was 13.8 years, and the time of death was 15.3 years.

Incidence rate and gender risk of 14 diseases (28%) were related to long time work in 50 common physical and mental diseases, including 6 cases (12%), such as diabetes, bacterial infection, cardiovascular death, musculoskeletal disorders, etc.

In addition, by examining the time sequence of related diseases, the researchers also found that these diseases are interrelated. Diabetes, for example, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, a two-way infection with bacterial infection, and a correlation with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.
