Ipsos and BCG have released a new report, “the end of management,” in which a survey of five major countries (China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States) shows that there are real dilemmas in management and that managers and their teams are generally eager for a new model.

Management is no longer a dream job

This is a real crisis, because almost all managers in the western countries surveyed are facing difficulties. 81% of the respondents said their work was harder; 71% of the management thought they were overworked; 69% felt more pressure; and 54% received less support. This led to 48% of respondents feeling less motivated than in previous years. As a result, only 37% of respondents hope to continue to hold management positions in the next five to 10 years.

Only 9% of management want to be a manager in the next 5-10 years, and 35% think the position is not attractive at all. Being a manager is no longer considered the Holy Grail of a career.

Only change is constant

66% of managers are waiting for changes to take place in the next five to 10 years, and a third of respondents believe that management will disappear by then.

New understanding of the perfect manager

There is no real consensus between managers and their teams. French respondents believe that a good manager can create value and motivate the team (60%); in the United States (59%) and the United Kingdom (60%), the ideal manager should help their team members develop skills and communicate actively; in Germany, the ideal manager can make wise decisions (49%); in China, the ideal manager should be able to create value and motivate the team Managers need to support and explain decisions and establish connections with other departments (53%).

Agile may be the answer

Many answers have surfaced in the search for solutions. Agile model was born in the start-ups and network companies in the 21st century, and has been successfully applied to more traditional industries such as banking and automobiles. In this model, the team is multidisciplinary and more autonomous, and a harmonious trust relationship is established between the manager and his team. Managers are considered to be the primary guarantors of alliances and autonomy. This new role may bring solutions to the current management crisis.
