The following is the Studies have found that drinking alone in adolescence and youth increases the risk of later alcohol use disorders From Carnegie Mellon University recommended by recordtrend.com. And this article belongs to the classification: Life data.

A new study finds that drinking alone during adolescence and youth strongly increases the risk of later alcohol use disorders (AUD). This risk is particularly high for women. The findings of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) were published in the July issue of drug and alcohol dependence.

“Most young people who drink alcohol are drinking with others in social occasions, but a considerable number of young people drink alone. Drinking alone is a unique and powerful risk factor for future alcohol use disorders,” said Kasey Creswell, associate professor of psychology at CMU and lead author. ” Even if we consider well-known risk factors, such as binge drinking, drinking frequency, socio-economic status and gender, we see a strong signal that young people drinking alone predict alcohol problems in adulthood. “

Excessive drinking is a global health burden, causing an estimated 3million deaths worldwide each year. Although doctors often screen young people for dangerous alcohol use, their problems usually focus on the frequency and amount of alcohol consumption. Creswell believes that the social environment in which young people drink alcohol is a crucial but often overlooked indicator of future alcohol abuse.

Creswell, together with Yvonne Terry mcelrath and Megan Patrick of the University of Michigan, analyzed data from the “monitoring the future” study, an ongoing epidemiological study on drug and alcohol abuse among American adolescents in adulthood. About 4500 teenagers (18 years old) answered a survey about their patterns of alcohol use and whether they drank alone. The researchers followed these participants for 17 years, provided information about alcohol use and alcohol consumption alone when they were young (23/24 years old), and reported aud symptoms in adulthood (35 years old).

According to the results of the study, adolescents and young adults who report drinking alone have an increased risk of developing aud symptoms in adulthood compared with their peers who drink only in social situations. Researchers controlled for a range of recognized early risk factors for alcohol problems, such as overeating and frequent drinking. They found that adolescents who drank alone were 35% more likely to develop aud symptoms at the age of 35 than those who drank only in social situations, while young adults who drank alone were 60% more likely to develop aud symptoms. Adolescent women who drink alone seem to be particularly at risk of alcohol problems in adulthood.

About 25% of teenagers and 40% of young adults report that they drink alone. These findings suggest that targeted interventions may help educate and inform these groups, especially young women, about the risk of drinking alone, in order to prevent the development of AUD in the future.

Previous work by Creswell and others has shown that young people drinking alone is a way to deal with negative emotions, which is a drinking pattern that is always related to the development of alcohol problems. Creswell points out that the pandemic has increased lonely drinking among young people.

“With pandemic related depression and anxiety increasing at the same time, we are likely to see an increase in alcohol problems among adolescents across the country.”- Kathy Creswell
