According to the UN Global Compact and Accenture’s global research on corporate sustainability, CEOs say that corporate contributions to sustainable development goals (sdgs) are not on track.
Only 21% of CEOs believe that enterprises play a key role in promoting global goals, and less than half (48%) of CEOs incorporate sdgs into their business operations. Despite some progress and innovation since the global goals were achieved in 2015, the socio-economic, geopolitical and technological uncertainties of the past four years have distracted CEOs’ efforts in sustainability.
Global business must play its part in promoting positive change. CEOs say the unprecedented shift in public expectations is encouraging companies to be active in sustainable development to build trust and competitiveness in the market and in the industry.
99% of CEOs surveyed said sustainability was critical to their organization’s future success, and 81% of companies were taking action to advance global goals. More than 200 companies surveyed have approved science based climate action goals, and a similar number have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. In addition, 63% of CEOs see technology as a key accelerator for their company’s socio-economic impact.
More than a quarter of CEOs (28%) believe that “lack of market pull” is the biggest obstacle to sustainable operation, and more than half (55%) of CEOs say that while seeking to invest in long-term strategic objectives, they are faced with the operational pressure of extreme cost awareness to make key trade-offs.
Nearly three quarters (71%) of CEOs who launched a decade long effort believe that as commitments and actions grow, businesses can play a key role in contributing to global sustainable development goals.
